bringing back a old thread

After seeing this thread https://forum.ih8mud.com/fj45-owners-club/563358-pictures-early-fj45-license-bracket.html I looked and found a original FJ45 license plate bracket from a mid sixties FJ45LP-B.

It brings up a couple questions. Which side did the tail light with the license plate light lense go on? It would appear the left side if the turn signal were on the outside. Bear's post number ten here states license plates were on the right side. But the 65 parts book shows a US market tail light, license plate holder and support rod. Looking at mine the only way I could see this might mount mount would be the support rod bolt at the end of the rear crossmember. The main frame rails and angle braces did not have any holes for the rod to bolt to:confused:

Second it also looks like the bumperette would not work on the side with the license plate. Bear's picture only has one on the left side and license plate on the right. Is this correct?

I'm pretty sure the "bumperettes" were a later option as were the larger tail lights and the right side license plate holder that mounted on the right side with it's own lights.

Gentlemen:

That set of photos I took were when I reinstalled only one of the bumperettes on the left rear as an example to photograph. There are holes on both sides of the 1983 rear frame crossmember for the OEM bumperettes.

Digging-in further at an old parts book shows some variations for the license plate mounting:
It shows three different license-plate backing plates used up until October 1969, three lower angle "stays", and one upper "stay". Here's the part numbers if you want to cross-reference anything to the FJ40s of that era:

The earliest mounting system was for both the FJ45P-B and the FJ45LP-B illustrated on the right rear of an RHD frame up to Frame Number FJ45-36235 (September 1968).
It used 75102-60040 as a backing plate which shows two integral holes for the upper mounting to the frame, and a lower stay 75126-60020.

Starting in September 1968 with FN FJ45-36236 the backing plate changed to 75121-35010 which used a separate upper stay 75122-60021 which attached with two bolts to the frame and indeterminate method to the backing plate. The lower stay is 75126-60022 and appears the same as earlier. This method is also indicated for both RHD and LHD.

Thirdly, for the USA market only, and only FJ45LP-B (LHD), up to FN FJ45-36235 (September 1968) is a backing plate 75102-60050, with lower stay 75127-60010. This is likely what was used for the US market pickups 1964-1967.

So there you have it. Illustrations showing attachment to RHD frames in the right rear position for 1964-1969, three different backing plates each looking different, three lower stays looking the same, and an upper stay used on the September 1968-up trucks.

Of course being a RHD country, Toyota illustrations tend to be of RHD applications. If the frames exported to LHD countries have factory holes for mounting the factory items on the opposite sides from what is illustrated, so be it.

If you want the 1970-up info, I can dig it up if needed.

I agree with you Sean I don't believe the bumperettes were ever a option in the US FJ45LP-B pickups. Curious was the US the only LHD market getting the 45 pickups back then. Also wonder what the big deal was having the license plate on the left. The parts book doesn't say LHD but US for these parts. Just like a few parts are marked Australia.

I thought there would mounting for both bumperettes on the rear crossmember of those that had them as a options but more curious if the bumperette and license plate bracket work together. Looks like the bumperette would cover the top of the license plate. On the front bumpers there are mounting holes for the license plate in two areas, holes for the PTO winch and then holes for OEM fog lights. But I think it was 73 before all could be used together with another bracket that bolted to the bottom of the bumper for the license plate. I getting at just because there are holes for the bumperette and license plate bracket don't mean they both can be used together.

I have all the parts info for the 65 FJ45LP-B which mine is so I don't need anymoe info on later years. The only thing of interest would be if the last bracket with two lights is offered by Toyota anymore. But I doubt it is.

After spending some time looking at a few late model 45 pickups, from at least 7/80-up, there are captive nuts on BOTH sides of the rear crossmember to accept the upper lights plate for the rear license plate, indicating possible mounting on EITHER side of the frame.

Interestingly only a 10/82-up frame has an extra right rear captive nut in the crossmember to allow the upper lights plate to mount further outboard to accomodate when using the optional rear bumperettes. That really puts the license plate almost to the right rear edge of the truck. Only on the right rear side, since the bumperettes were only intended for the LHD market. So at least some countries in that LHD market used right rear license plate mounting.

And although the bumperettes are dimensionally symmetric, the mounting ears are drilled differently on either side to accomodate the frame punched holes for the optional pintle hitch. So.....the bumperettes are technically "handed."

I realize none of this pertains to your earlier trucks, but at least it points to some planning for license mounting done by the factory later in the production run of the trucks.

Is there any law or regulation within the USA mandating either left-rear or right-rear license plates, when not centered? If so, wouldn't Toyota have had to meet that regulation to sell within the US?

BTW, there are several clear photos of two 1984 pickup trucks and their rear bumperettes and license plates in a posting elsewhere here today from Saudi Arabia about "collector" cars.
