The Distributor is R & L Sales and their T Max Winches Internet Site http://rlsales.com.au/products/4wdRecovery/4wd_Recovery.asp

"Designed and Engineered in Australia" built and owned by a chinese company.

T-MAX(HANGZHOU)INDUSTRIAL CO.,LTD

I just hope they aren't as slow as their website: http://www.tmaxtools.com

The factory pics could be anywhere, but judging from the fact that they never actually say where they are made I'm going to guess china.

they've been around for a long time...if they were anygood, more people would be able to comment on them.

Couldn't you say the same thing if they were bad?

Tmax look like a good winch if you compared to the old warn m8000-XD9000 class. If you compare it to the 9.5XP or 9.5Ti they are no comparison.

I have owned 1 superwinch and 3 Warn so far and everytime it broke it was due to water damage. My next winch would be waterproof for the same reason. If you are thinking to put it inside closed bumper get the water proof version. Its not fun to get the winch out from ARB bumper and you could not see the condition very well inside the bumper.

not really, because you're more likely to hear bad news than good, so if htey sucked, you'd hear a s***load of bad news...all i've ever heard is mediocre, bordering on slow, so i'll stick to ramsey or warn.

Here is some info for those interested:

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=249602

Spaceghost runs one. I found lots of info. It "appears" that those dissing it don't own one. On the otherhand, lots of folks who own the MM diss them and complain.

Those that own them seem to like them. Only found one thread of an owner who had an issue and they sent him a new winch free. Several posts on great customer service.

Per another thread, it doesn't match the Warn specs for pulling power when down to the 4th layer.

The newer T-Max winches are comparable in speed to the Warn's

I am trading off in my mind if that loss of pulling power is worth double the price (almost). Sent some more requests for info to the rep.

The War M12 is definitly superior and would win hands down within a 30% price difference. Based on what I read, I wouldn't buy a mile marker or Harbor Freifgt if it was 75% cheaper. Although I do have a Chicago on my 40 that has had no issues the 3 times I have used it other than it is slow. This winch is for the LX450.

I guess as long as I can get convinved that it will work when I need it (reliability) the loss in pulling power through the different layers would not be a big deal to me. I already own an ARB snatch Block if that becomes a problem. Have to figure out how to use it though.

:

4th layer nothing! Per their own literature (TM's)....the Warn on its 5th layer is beating the TM on its 2nd.

It doesn't match the Warn ANYWHERE except the 1st layer. The TM on its 4th layer is pulling 6,894 lbs. (that won't get you out of much!)

The Warn by comparison is pulling 9,770 lbs. heck...its pulling 9,250 on its 5th layer! Plus the Warn is packing 30 more feet of cable.

Having a winch that won't pull you out (but paying less for it) is false economy IMOP.

Flintknapper - I am not disagreeing with you that the Warn M12 is superior. I am not sure I agree with you that this winch wouldn't be able to pull me out either. BUT, I am still reseraching it. Those that know me know that I research for a while based on my engineering background. As a manager I also understand we sometimes design, spec and buy Lexus's when a Toyota will do.

Romer,

If you’d indulge the ramblings of a middle aged man on the subject … I want to get a wench ..er … winch for my pig and I’ve been researching it for the better part of a year. (Ya, I’m hyphenated) If funds permitted, I’d get a Warn 8274 (which can be currently be purchased for $999 from http://www.andale.com/store?sid=288...ew=CAT_HOME&newStore=null&parentCatId=1359314 with free shipping) or a Warn 9.5XP for $949 + shipping from http://www.e-winches.com/detail.aspx?ID=674 It’s a toss up as to which I’d get. For $50+ more – the highly touted 8274, or the 9.5XP with continuous duty control pack and perhaps better water sealing.

However, resources are finite, so I’ve been looking into other brands. I’m intrigued with T-max. I personally don’t know anyone who uses one. However, Rudezuk on the pbb sells them. Yes, they’re made in the PRC. I don’t consider that a negative, as my Delta saw is made there and it works just fine. What I would consider their first revision is now out (the EW 9000) which has been upgrade to a 6.6hp motor (the EW 9500 had a 5.5hp motor). At the last SEMA (http://www.semaphotos.com/imageSingle/ImageID=SEM2004110224040 ), they displayed their new Integrated Series – EW 10000, and 12000 (For more info see http://www.tmaxtools.com/products/new_products.htm ). Their marketing department states, ‘Ten-times the reliability of conventional solenoids’ and it includes a wireless multi-control remote. I haven’t heard anything about them, nor what they cost.

One reservation I have about getting a T-max is that that www.e-winches.com quit carrying them about a month ago. They had the best prices I’ve found on the 9000. So why did they stop selling them? I don’t know, but they still sell Warn, Ramsey, Superwinch and Milemarker. And while on the subject, the Milemarker E12000 is made by T-max (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=249602 ).

Rudezuk is currently running a sale on T-max 9000s. You’ll have to message him on the pbb site for the price shipped to your door. So for me, the question is, ‘Warn or T-max 9000 for about half the price?’ I still haven’t decided …

Sorry for the long winded post!

Romer, The T-Max will pull you out (on the 1st layer) and then depending upon how "stuck" you are it MAY pull you out on subsequent layers. The drop in pulling power from the 1st to 2nd layer (and then it gets worse) suggests that you would do as well with a good quality 8,000lb. winch. I can appreciate your engineering background as I am a mechanical engineer myself.
This does not mean I understand everything about vehicle recovery, athough I have nearly 35 yrs. of offroading experience to speak from.
Please consider buying (saving if necessary) the best quality, highest rated winch you can for a heavy vehicle like your cruiser.
It is common to need more than one winch for some extractions but your offroad escapades may differ from mine.

Cheers.

Ok, I believe that the T-Max would probably work for my situation. However, I know it's a mistake to go agains the advice of this board. I ended up getting the Warn M12. My toy budget is shot for a while. I found a screaming deal at the following web site

http://www.winchdepot.com/winchDetail.asp?partNumber=17801

I took it to 4wheel parts and they matched it. You can save money by buying it from the link and not having to pay Tax.

I did a little price searching and e-mailing a few vendors that carried this. My computer crashed and I lost who I was talking to, but the price of the 12000 integrated T-Max, was almost the same as the Warn M12000. The guy said it was built better, but again he was a salesman talking about his product. I don't know which is truely better, between the Warn 12000 vs. T-Max 12000 Integrated. Are the pull ratings people are quoting for the Integrated model?? I also e-mailed Warn and asked them when they were going to make a M12000ti, which they have no plans in the works for this. I wonder if the commercial Warn 12000 is any more waterproof and built heavier duty than the regular one?? Probably the most tried and true and most likely to get some help with it if you have any problems on a trail, would be the Warn M12000. Just wish it was waterproof!

I have tested the T-MAX 9,500, and it is still on an associate's Jeep. We dissambled the winch, performed detailed heat, amp and load testing AND several field trials.

The overall quality of the winch is good, and they use Bosch motors. The negatives we found were winch controller wiring quality, wired controller ergonomics (hand size issues), AMP draw at load was higher than advertised and line speed was slower than advertised. Cooling is good and surface temps were lower than the M8000 winch we used for comparison.

We performed extensive field tests and full cable length pulls, and the T-MAX never failed. However, the most compelling dissadvantage was line speed. The T-MAX was nearly 30% slower than the M8000, and 18% slower than advertised. AMP draw was 9% higher than advertised.

The T-MAX winches are assembled and machined in China

Hope this helps :)

With free shipping, that is a awfully good price.
