Hello all
I have been enjoying the 70 series forum for years, but haven't made a lot of posts, since my projects are in their infancy, but they are gaining steam and I would greatly appreciate the input.

I am working through in my head the idea of a 79 series pickup (wide nose, modern dash) that is currently a 1HZ truck, and swapping it to a 1FZ-FE/H152 + big turbo for the fun of it.

I have the truck, chassis, and most all of the little pieces at this point. The truck is set up for a 1HZ but would need to be sourced if I stayed that route, as the spare I have is probably going with a different project.

The "Brown Water" idea of a 1FZ-FTE was cooked up between @RocketCityCrzrs Rory and myself

I have the following- 1FZ-FE, rebuilt by Mosley Motors' Cameron (I still need to assemble)
Borg Warner efr turbo
6boost manifold
injectors from- i have no idea it has been so long since I bought them, but bigger
Haltech ecu
Water to air intercooler pile of parts
Still need new transmission (H152) and bellhousing and other pieces

The big thing is finding the harness to swap to the gqs/petrol engine. I do have a new 80 series engine harness in a box for the 1FZ-FE, but that may not be a big help. My dash harness is a used mine truck item in so-so shape (1HZ). If I had to swap it out, I would not be heart broken. On an even larger extreme, I could build this truck with the old metal dash- I have one sitting, but would still need all of the harnii.

This is brainstorming business at this point, but I am very appreciative of all the knowledge on these things that are beyond my pay grade, and welcome the input.

Cheers!

Hello,

You should check if your 80 Series harness is from a manual transmission truck.

FZJ7x harnesses are hard to source. You can look for one in Middle East wreckers. Some 'Mud members hail from that neck of the woods, and may help you.

An H151F transmission is a direct bolt-on to the 1FZ engine.; in fact, it was the transmission of choice for some FZJ7x trucks from factory. Bell housing and related parts are available. The H152F may need some modifications, namely a different input shaft.

70 Series trucks had the 1FZ engine until around 2010. Mounts and other accessories for the engine bay should be available.

Hope this helps.

if you are thinking about running it on a standalone like a Haltech why would it matter what body harness the truck has?

I tried to find a 1FZ-F wiring harness to no avail. Asked all my sources. The wreckers over there don't like to sell them whole.

Believe all the 1FZ engines when to EFI around 99 or so (but I'm probably wrong).

Hello,

I was thinking of 1FZ-FE harnesses. 1FZ-F harnesses are long gone.

A 1FZ-FE harness from a manual transmission truck, either a 70 Series or an 80 Series, would help. I do not know how easy to source they are. Perhaps it is possible to find a 2007-2010 model year harness from a wrecker.

And yes, all the 1FZ engines became EFI after 1999. Australia-spec 70 Series had them since the early 1990s.

Again, he said he is going to put a Haltec on it. It doesn't matter if the body harness has any plugs for a 1FZ Ecu or not, it's a complete not-issue. The only thing the body harness will have to do with the engine is send voltage to the start from the key (same location on 1HZ and 1FZ), and maybe hook up the dash oil pressure/coolant gauge if his cluster even has them. So three wires.
Best would be to pull the harness you already have from the vehicle that it already matches perfectly to, clean, inspect, make repairs as necessary properly on a table out of the vehicle, reinstall, easy

That helps a lot! Thank you

That makes great sense. I don't love wiring harness work, but I can do it. There are always points of a restoration/build that suck. This is one of the suckier parts for me.

Motivational video.
Every time I think the 1FZ-FE is not my favorite engine across all brands, I watch this.

I am not chasing 2000+ horsepower, but it is still amazing

Who says you need to do it :)

It’s a bit more than three wires if you want to do it correctly and make it appear as if someone was doing the work to mimic factory protocols.

When ya pop the hood and factory Land Cruiser engine is in there, it’s nice that it looks as if it came from Yoshiwara

for a stock-ECU engine swap, sure, but that's not what Patrick said he was wanting to do

That is definitely a hangup for me. The other problem I keep thinking about is the amount of downtime from start to finish. There is a ton to work out. The pieces to this project are tucked away and not a bother, but as soon as it starts, the pressure is on to finish. That problem alone may kill the whole idea vs just staying the 1HZ route.

As always with my crazy Cruiser build schemes, a lot of my future will be told by what pops up for sale through the Mud classifieds or through conversations with other Cruiser friends. Power plant ideas/suggestions for this thing have been thus far: 2UZ, 1FZ-FE, 1HZ+T, 1HD-T, 1HD-FT, 1HD-FTE

My other "tied for first" choice would be a 1HD-T. I am not worried about BEB's and love the simplicity. Install would be easy on a truck already designed for a 1HZ.

The 1FZ-FE is my favorite Toyota engine, and I have most of a new one sitting here plus performance add ons. Maybe I need to just build an 80 series for this engine to keep it simple  . I am a master of finding reasons to need another Land Cruiser.

I agree with Matt. On my VZ hellhole project I took a stock 1FZ harness and stripped out the non-engine /tranny wires to make a stand alone harness and then kept the rest of the wires from the stock 79 series for everything else. There was less than 10 wires going to the old engine, so I just connected the few I wanted -- oil pressure, water temp, starter wires from 79 harness to the 80 harness. Hardest part was finding a spot for the ECU to sit under the dash. I never figured out the tach.

Anyway, it was a ton of work to get that harness all cleaned up, so a stand alone Haltec makes much more sense to me than trying to adapt the 80 harness. I would not do it again.

Totally understand the dynamics.

I’d go the 1HD-T with a new short block and head (both are still available from Toyota).

Good luck with the decisions!

I should have put a extra 1HZ in that HZJ73 then your problem was solved already ;)

I hadn't thought about that! The truck would be basically new. Take off cab, box, front clip. Restored chassis. I am going to build my dream daily driver pickup.

That would have squatted it a little! I asked you about 1HD-t's but didn't think to ask about 1HZ's. I have one here, but I think it is going down the road with the project HZJ-73 I bought from you a few years ago.

You might have gotten a little Carolina squat indeed 😉
