Gear Upgrade for 1FZ-FE?

Hi All.

I've got a 2006 Troopy with a 1Fz-FE. With 600k km, my gear has been whining, and I've been looking for a replacement. I saw a thread on someone replacing the the 1HZ gearbox with the gearbox from an 80 series. Is that possible with the 1FZ as well? What modifications are required?

Hello,

The 1FZ-FE engine in a Troopy is mated to the H150F transmission. Some 80 Series with 1HZ engines use this transmission as well.

The other transmission mated to 1HZ engines is the R151F. It is generally reliable but it may not be a match for the 1FZ engine's power.

If your donor 80 Series has an H150F transmission, it is good. Otherwise, keep looking.

Maybe I am asking the obvious here. When was the last time you changed your transmission's oil? When you shift gears, do you feel a click?

Sometimes fresh oil helps a lot with whining. Other times, synchros and gears need replacement.

Thanks Juan,

Yes, I just changed a couple synchros, the two front bearings and gears. Still getting the whine and there is a click/clunk when releasing the clutch after shifting to gears two and three. Oil was changed with the gear swap to 140 weight.

If the donor 80 Series has an H150F, it may be time to replace your transmission.
