has anyone swapped a 93-94 1fzfe into a 95-97 truck or vice versa? I am trying to figure out how much of the harness/sensors are plug and play.

I think the engines are the same, but the intakes and accessories are different. You would probly be better off sticking with your other plan and swap out the bits rather than the whole thing

Semlin--I was looking into this, and the only real difference is the crank position sensor in the later years.

I had found a decent 95-97 engine, but after researching it, the installation would entail way more hassle than I would like, in order to get OBD II electronics. If you want to put a 93-94 into a later truck, you'll need to take the harness and computers with it, and, oh, by the way, the transmission. If you were to put a later model engine into a 93-94, that's doable, just leave the crankshaft position sensor unhooked up, and use the old harness/computer on the newer engine.

I looked into it, and concluded that putting a whole 95-97 drivetrain into an early-model FZJ is more trouble than it's really worth. Plus, you wind up with that newer transmission... :)

thanks, I was not planning an engine swap. I am trying to figure out what sensor differences there are so I can figure out if a 93-94 could be switched to obd2 using the existing harness.

theKirk, when you say the "only" real difference is the crank position sensor did you confirm all the other sensors were the same and used the same connectors? that would suggest the dash would also work.

also, why would there be a problem switching a 93-94 motor into a 95+ truck? are you saying the crank position sensor can't be retrofitted to the earlier block so that motor could run obd2, or did i miss something?

Why would you want to put a 1fzfe in an FZJ?

Cuz that is what is in there! Not that Semlin is doing an engine swap.

(Sorry, couldn't resist to post since you are off my name by a "-"....)

Semlin, the crank position sensor, per my researches, is in the upper oil pan. In order to put a 93-94 into an OBD-II configuration, you'd need to add that sensor, and change the oil pan. From what I gather, and please understand that I'm not saying I'm an expert on this issue, the block is the same. Some of the sensors are the same. The computers, and the harnesses are quite different, and since the transmission computers talk to the OBD-II engine computer, you'd need to change the transmission as well, in order to put OBD-II into the older truck, which was what I was looking at. There may be subtle differences in the harness, as well--CDan would probably know.

Putting an early-model 1FZFE engine into a later truck might not be that big a deal, once you added the crank position sensor and the upper oil pan. How big a deal that is, I don't know--I was looking at going the opposite direction, so didn't look into it at all.

thanks. This id's at least one pita sensor issue anyway.

in theory you don't need to change the transmission but i have a lot of homework still to do there and might end up wishing I had changed if i do it ;). the 442F was used 95-97 elsewhere in the world in obd2 trucks. just a matter of figuring out what is involved. might be a foreign ecu or it might be an interface or a foreign tcm or both or it might be ignoring the ecu and running the 93 stand alone tcm (or maybe I need the ECU out of a manual tranny truck ;) ).

From '94 to '95, there were quite a few subtle changes to take note of.
(not to mention the obvious ones)

- OBD - 94: OBDI; '95: OBDII (as of 1/95 production date)
- Air Flow Meter 94:Vane Type; '95:Hot-Wire Type
- O2 Sensors - Different type of heated sensor, element type different (obdII related differences) 94: Titania element; '95 Zirconia element
- Engine/Trans controller '94: had ECM and TCM (2 separate computers); '95 ECM & TCM Combined into one unit
- '95 has Crankshaft Position Sensor - located in No. 1 oil pan (upper)
- Others:
- elimination of a evap emission control VSV
- PAIR (Pulsed Secondary Air Injection) eliminated
- '95 has aluminum core radiator
- '95 has linear-type temperature controlled fluid coupling

FWIW... Dan.

93/94 into 95 and later you have to swap the pans and also the ring on the crank that is the crank position sensor triggers from. Probably the biggest part of the job.

95 or later into earlier, easier since you can just ignore the crank sensor.

There you have it......

with any luck you'll already have a leaking rear arch seal and a fractured chain slipper and that will take some of the sting out of the job.

I thought the early 80's were FJ80's and the last of the 80's were FZJ80's.

Correct.

1991 - 1992 = FJ80 w/ 3FE engine (2 years).
A transition between the FJ62 and the FZJ80. Good trucks in their own right, but missing some key features.

1993 - 1997 = FZJ80 w/ 1FZFE engine (5 years)
With the factory diff locks, it has been argued that these Cruisers were the stoutest Land Cruisers ever to roll off the lot of a U.S. dealer.

the chain slipper was fine last april and the pan arch sealed up when i switched to rotella synthetic ;)

no, this part of the project makes the straight vaf/maf swap a lot more attractive.

anyway, I'm learning as I go here.

late to the game here but wanted to kn ok w hi ow this engine swap turned out. I plan on doing something similar soon. Taking a 1fz head and putting it on a 1fz block. Wanting to see if it will work out.
