I've never lived in or owned cars from "rusty" areas (this LX470 lived in TX prior to my purchase) so forgive me for a totally basic newbie question on the topic. I've searched the forums for similar issues, but this seemed a little different. I was washing my truck the other day and noticed this small rust spot on the roof - maybe 1/4" in diameter. This qualifies as an area where all I care about is preventing further rust. I see so many different ways to treat rust but most seem like total overkill. Can I just sand this and use some Permatex Rust Treatment on it?

I'm working rock chips that were not corrected as they happened, at this time on the Graybeard. Which I'll post up what/how I'm doing it soon.

The newer 100 series 06-07, seems to have better body metal protection from rust, but they will rust. The older the chip/spot that has cut through the primer, the more it will travel under the paint. So a 20 yr old 1mm chip may end up 10mm spread under the paint. I micro grind (always looking for better tools to grind with) the paint and metal away. I work slowly just removing paint and metal that I must, and no more. I use a hand held microscope to see the metal to primer line is clean of rust. I've used self etching prime on bare metal. Today I'm use epoxy primer (nasty stuff on lungs, use care).

@2001LC is correct. Take care of it now.. sand larger than the area that is showing as there is likely rust under the paint. Treat with a rust inhibitor and then paint over with a primer and top coat to properly handle. Take it from someone that has dealt with the whole "larger than it seems" stuff on rust. If you are curious, look at my FJ60 build thread and go back to prior to Sept. 2018. You will see what I am talking about.

I have a similar one on my truck that I need to handle, mainly small rock chips like that occur throughout the life of the truck. Rock takes enough paint off that metal is exposed and then elements tend to rust it over time. Luckily with stuff like this, unless you live in a heavy salted area, they can be handled pretty quickly and easily.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the quick responses. I'll report back.

How are you guys masking to put paint on? Wet sand after? Whats the process after rust has been removed?

Really best thing to do is treat area with a rust inhibitor like an acid (just spray/wipe on briefly, let sit for a minute or two, then wipe off). Paint prep for such a small area isn't really all the bad. I would probably get a large sheet of butcher paper and do like a surgeon; Place over affected area, tape down edges, cut out area that is be painted, hit with some paint prep liquid, wipe with microfiber towel, couple light coats with a primer (in my case white), scuff with a red scotchbrite pad once cured (probably about 15 mins per light coat), then hit with stock color paint much like primer. For the stock paint you can go to a local paint shop and they should be able to match the color code for you.

PREP IS EVERYTHING!!! I can't say this enough, when I did my FJ60 it literally spent a good 18+ hours prepping everything. Painting the truck (entire truck) really only took me maybe an hour with full usage of a gallon of paint (approximately 3 coats). You could tell the few spots that I did not hit well with prep as the paint did not really stick well in those places (two 1" long areas on a window sill). There are great videos on YouTube on what to do, how to feather in, how to blend, wet sanding, etc. Honestly this is on the roof so I will likely just hit with some white primer and call it good.
