So how much should I air down my tires? And what the hell am I supposed to do when it's time to leave and my wheels are rubbing the asphalt?

I'm new to this. And it would be really embarrassing to end up trapped in sand....

I was wondering about that too the first time I went there, but you will be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to run around the dunes in an 80. I would suggest you not air down much or at all at first and test the limits. If you get sort of stuck too much (don't insist), air down a bit and basically learn the limits of the truck that way. A great learning experience.

Basically, you won't get stuck with an 80. You can always air down a bit more and you'll be amazed at the difference it makes. Lockers will help in some cases too. The only time is was "stuck" was in a deep pit with steep sides and not enough room to maneuver. I tried to go up the side (100 ft or so) 4 or 5 times and couldn't quite reach the top. At that point I said enough already and I aired down quite a bit (12 or 15 psi IIRC) and just drove on up.

You can probably do just about everything at SnT with 20 psi. If you go down to 15 you're basically unstoppable in an 80.

(OK, of course, now that I've said that I will get really stuck... sigh....)

there are gas stations around for air, and there will be plenty of folks with compressors around in an emergency.

Oh, yeah, don't sweat the tires, street tires are probably best.

Tomato - listen to Sam - 15 psi and you'll be fine. Chevron or a friendly fellow cruiserhead with either an air compressor or CO2 tank if you really want to air up before hitting the pavement. Most visit the Chevron to gas up for the trip home anyway!

Lots of folks have either on-board air or CO2 tanks for filling tires. I'm sure one of them (myself included) would be happy to help out another cruiserhead. Especially someone from so close to home as Sonoma :-)

No Pozo run? Double damn!

Ham Radio / CB Ops:

Ok you Ham's will there be a 2M or 440 freq that will be monitored for the event?

Thanks

Don't sweat this at all. Air to 12 psi and you will have great traction all weekend. If you need a bit more traction, go to 10. Drive to the Chevron under 45mph and you'll have no problems at all, really.

Getting stuck in the sand is normal, and I wouldn't be embarrassed at all. There is a patch of very soft stuff as soon as you turn left off the hard stuff near the water. Last year in my 60 I didn't shift into 4 wheel drive, I didn't shift down and I did dig in the moment I turned up into camp. Locked the hubs, low range and made it inot camp just fine. Besides, if you do get stuck, hand each of your rescuers a beer and you'll have new best friends.

Jim posted this. The Simplex frequency will be 146.460. Someone will have that on all weekend. I'm going to have the Mt Lowe repeater on dual watch since some of our group is coming in late.

Ham radio frequencies

The Mt Lowe repeater operates on a frequency of 147.36 Mhz. A CTCSS (PL) tone of 127.3 Hz is required to access the repeater. The repeater does transmit PL. It is located 2624 feet above sea level at Mt Lowe near San Luis Obispo. This is the W6FM repeater system.

This repeater is linked to the Williams Hill repeater which should give solid coverage from Chular, just south of Salinas, to Paso Robles. It operates on 146.73 MHz with a CTCSS of 127.3 Hz.

That's about 125 miles of HWY 101 North of Pismo!

I'm not sure where you might pick it up from the I-5 Corridor, but I suspect the Mt. Lowe repeater would be accessible on HWY 46/41 near Cholame or Shandon.

Again, Mt. Lowe is easily reachable from the beach and sand dunes.

Coming from the South, the W6OBB repeater in "Sunny Santa Barbara, Tower of Power", 147.000 (+) 131.8 Broadcast Peak, Santa Barbara County. I hit it easily from the dunes and have talked to people as far South as Thousand Oaks.

Simplex
As noted by Cruiserdrew, I'm suggesting the "NorCal" simplex frequency, 146.46 for the majority of the during event communication.

Jim-If you are listening at all, I'm coming in from the South on Thursday. I'll try the SB repeater, and then the Mt. Lowe as I get closer. I'm aiming for lunch in SB, and then the beach at Pismo by mid afternoon. Looking forward to a relaxed day of doing as little as possible, except what it takes to set up the camp.

Paul, you should check out the LAX to San Luis Obispo (SBP) puddle jumper. The airport is about 20 minutes from the beach, I'm sure we can arrange transportation.

Or Santa Maria, SMX. I can pick him up and get him there.

Missing this event two years in a row sucks. Hope everyone has fun. I think getting out there for next year is going to go on the calendar. ;)

I'll be monitoring while in the truck. Outside setting up camp might be sketchy. Next year I'll have a HT, but it didn't happen this year. I'll give you a call when we are moving onto the beach Thursday morning. KI6MIE "Microsoft Internet Explorer".

It will be interesting to see the range on the repeaters.

For lunch in SB I like Brophys, in the marina North of the Pier.

Main camp will be just past Pole 6. Same as last year.

I'm probably going to drive down on Thursday. What should I look for? Land Cruisers on the beach? I don't think I've ever been to Pismo. GOD I'M SUCH A NOOB.

I'll bring drinks. Non-alcoholic drinks. Cause I'm not 21 yet.

it is safe to say that you won't have any trouble finding SnT. Between the huge sign and the cruisers, no worries...

Just head down the beach to pole 6. Even for a newbie, you can't miss it. It's further down the beach than you think tho...about 2-3 miles IIRC. Just keep going! :D

You live in the Sonoma area or attending school at SSU?
