Although it MAY fit the hole in the thermostat, but it does not have the right shape to deal with the bypass chambers. See post #2 in this thread. Not likely to do much good. I would rather run without any thermostat that pay $120 for one!!
 
The thermostat in that photo does not look the same as a 1FZ version.

The Japanese part number off of the box mine came in is 16340-SP030.
 
The 1FZ used the same TRD thermostat as the 4.7. I would think that one would work.

There is no part# I can see but it specifically mentions it suits the LC V8. I'm just not sure what V8 model thermostat fits the 1FZFE???
Is three a chance that running this 170 degree unit would run TOO cool in cooler/more moderate weather? Wouldn't that have an effect on the fueling/timing/torque converter lockup performance if the engine never gets up to "full running temperature"? John

Here in OZ, it really doesn't get that cold in winter and it's pretty warm to hot all the other times. Since my 80s is only used for 4WDing, it only gets driven once or twice a month. If I head south during winter for a trip, I might experience temps of -3degC in the early hours of the morning but these always move into single digits by the time I start the engine and the ambient temps almost always warms up as the day progresses.

I'm not really trying to alter the operating temp of the engine as such, I just want to experiment with having a thermostat that opens sooner and therefore giving me a greater flow of coolant already when engine temps do rise near 100degC when the engine is getting a really hard time driving up very steep hill climbs in low range with the AC pumping on really hot days. On such days when the ambient is higher than normal, temp recovery can be slow if you are only idling. My thinking is if I can get a larger volume of water flowing through the engine earlier on, I can prolong the higher engine temps. With a very large trans cooler and intercooler rad up front, my otherwise in good working order cooling system is a little disadvantaged. I'm just looking for ways to get a bit more safety margin back.

Having just tested two, near new OEM thermostats, I can confirm there is not a lot of water flow between it's opening temp of 85degC and 90degC (looking at the size of the opening at those temps).

If I get one, I'll be sure to report my findings.
