so i dont no if this thread belongs in the hardcore section but i thought i would ask anywayz. my question is can you run a 4-link on the stock axles no problem or will i be breaking birfields left and right. i understand i will need to upgrade my birfields but when i have it all apart would i be better off running with dana 60's or some military axles i can get my hands on...

thanks to anyone who spends the time to read this and respond much appreciated!

Birfields

Blowing birfields has to do with what size tire you are running, and what gear ratios and how much power you are putting to them.

No birfields in the rear so that is not an issue.

What is plans for motor/trans/xfr/gear ratio and tire size.

Four linking is the way to go if you can swing the $$$$$

JR

i have a four link in the rear stock axle well upgrade when i brake it :whoops: or when the money is right lets see the cruiser you plan no cuting up

pics later

ill be taking pics later on in the week the reason in doing this is if i have the money and im gonna do cutting to my axles to do spring over ill just do 4-link and get the real s*** done i just been told by people that i should change my axles if thats the cause but i would rather not thinking running longfields in the front cromos in the rear... dont know if that would be ok?

also something else to add the reason in doing all this is i tipped my land cruiser over this weekend on a trail that jeeps with exo-cages were doing and i as a dumbass planned on showing them what a land cruiser could do... well im running no power steering... and spring under axle i know i got nothing hardcore about my land cruiser but i wanted to do it well my ego got to me and i ended up getting pulled out by 2 of the jeeps i told myself from there on out it would never happen again... well i said that wrong i tryed to get threw the rest of it but oo did i know that i also blew my front diff along with my locker and oo also my tranny so im planning on putting in my sm465 tanny with np205 t-case i have sitting in the garage full rebuilt that i had for sale... well im planning on using that now and im gonna run the stock 2F motor cause i dont wanna run no chevy small blocks! i got 4 in my garage but id rather show people up and when im done they go and ask me what you got in there and i just say the stock motor... im sure alot of you people will laugh at that but motor is my last thing i wanna change or intell i blow the motor up :)

thanks for reading again and all the comments all the help is appreciated!

what is your budget?

i mean i no that 4-links are pretty spendy but i was thinking somewhere in the 4k range most likly... if you think thats not enough well then ill just keep saving but i still want to go 4-link and most to all the fab work myself so im not worried about that... i wanna just run 35 under my LC im gonna take some pics tonight... its july in oregon and it just dumped a load of rain on us... wtf! its the summer so im gonna wait tell its alittle nicer out to get some pics...

For 35's, then just link it. 4K will get you axles and perhaps links if you are very careful about spending..

as far as axles go do you mean chevy axles or the birfields...? and you think if i 4link it should i run a bigger tire size or will 35 be ok... what i mean is are 35 going to sufficent enough for a 4link or should i run a bigger size tire?

The suspension type does not specify tire size. If all you want to do is 35's then with some upgrades to your stock axles you will be fine.

Why do you want to link it to begin with?

All this talk about links and $$, and as far as I can see no discussion so far about what springs you would use. That, IMO is a more important question than the links at this point in the decision, especially in terms of the costs. Where are you located in Orygun?

I run 37" tires on 30-spline Longfield inners/outers on my FJ40...I have yet to break them....but have broken a 4340 inner before with the 37's...I also run 39.5's on occasion, and have busted some other stuff. (hell, if it's breakable, I've done it...and have been the first on a handful of things...)

The link suspension has zero to do with breakage, and the added balance is likely to reduce breakage given the same trail selection....however, that same added balance will push you to harder trails and more breakage...nasty cycle.

I researched for over a year before tackling my rear 4-link 1/4 elliptical setup, and am overall very pleased with it's performance. Medusa has likewise done piles of research, and has a great setup.

If this is a new idea, sit on it for a while....I did my setup "quickly" and it was 3-4 months of long nights.

There is no such thing as one answer to any question you have, so expect to wade thru 100 opinions to form your own solution...driving style, vehicle weight, trail choice, tire selection, and 100's of other things all come into play and what worked great on my rig may fail miserably on yours.

My next rig will be running SAW Airshocks, linked front and rear, with a pile of other changes...

Also, I ditched my SM465 in favor of a 700R auto a couple years back....won't bother with a manuall again....

and finally, the NP205 is a phat worthless hog (tho unbreakable)...IMO, there are better choices for t-cases out there that won't kill your belly clearance...specifically, the D300 or the Atlas...

and, don't forget, only a Cruiser t-case likes your current offset rear diff, so you'll be changing rear axles regardless....

lots of decision, choose carefully ;)

yea i understand there is so much more to learn about 4-links im just trying to get some little informtion i understand that it not just one week project but i really wanna start doing the reasearch as far as where i live im located in portland oregon

untitled-1.jpg

this is just a picture of me on the trail last weekend before i put it on its side... its no beast but its fun on the trails(besides the no power steering)

why do you want to link it?

is it just me, or are you relying on that Confer bed bar by itself??

step 1 - put a good cage in there...MetalTech is in your neck of the woods
step 2 - power steering...give yourself a fighting chance on the trails, and plan for hydro assist someday (nice with 37+ tires)

once those two major items are complete, you should have had enuf research time to make the call on the link suspension...

as far as the cascade cruisers go i would love 2 but man i work to afford my living and i work tell 730 to 8 everyday sept sunday so i could never get out there in time as far as my roll cage im good with it i have built it all up myself its not a stock cage i have it going in to the frame... i can take more pics but i promise that cage can with stand my normal day beating. got a friend in the muffler business and i use his metal bender he does baja races and we built the cage. why am i doing my suspension well in theory im running spring under i should run spring over before i go out and fab up the work for my 4-link but i have a problem with my ego and i wanna go out there and show any jeep or any truck at that what my truck or land cruiser is capable... not a good thing do dumb stuff:doh: i work for carr chevy in oregon and i plan on doing most of the work with buddies from work got one buddy with a land cruiser and one with a yota truck and i know there is a million land cruiser places out here in oregon that know stuff so im willing to spend sometime i dont plan on tackling this task this month or next at that rate im looking at winter time to tear it up i have a shop in my backyard with a lift and everything so i go the stuff just need a little guidence little help and some talking to cause im for sure as hell not the smartest person out ther and i love to hear useful information...
