But I personally wouldn't put a Ham radio faceplate up there. I have ridden in a few trucks who have this, and in each have drawn similar conclusions:
- adjusting the knobs is downright difficult while in motion, particularly the sensitive ones like volume and squelch. Tough to get fine dexterity when your arm is extended like that.
- the handset, which comes from the faceplate, hangs down like a trucker CB, unless you also run an extended cable and bring it out down below somewhere. I don't like seeing the coiled cord up there, or like it swinging around, just a distraction.
- Looking up is harder to do than looking down. I'm already used to looking down at the heater controls, shifters, stereo... so one more thing down there seems more natural. And when driving into the sun, it can make trying to focus on the radio all that more difficult. I personally think it's safer down below.
The best place, IMO, is just in front of the transfer case shifter. This allows you to keep the handset cords running down into the passenger foot well, and also rest your hand on the t-case shifter when making adjustments. If done right, you still have access to both 12v outlets.
