I'd be happy with a sunglasses holder. Anyone know if the 03 or whatever year plus will work with my 98 that just came with a garage door opener blank ?

X2, that's what I was trying to get at. I'd make much better use of the sunglasses holder. I need to read up on homelink as well, don't know anything about that.

Me too!

. On my 2000 LC it was just a spot to pull down and mount your normal garage door opener. In my 2004 LX it was the Sunglasses case and it sucks. Only deep enough for small glasses or aviators (good thing they are back in style). Anyway I just went in and put my garage door opener in there after removing the plug.

So what exactly do people want? A place to mount a ham radio? I use a company called solid concepts all the time. They can print stuff out of sintered steel, aluminum and titanium as well as all other plastics.

I've wanted to do this myself so maybe after November I'll throw something together. I'm busy with work until December.

I will scan my cover and convert it to a solid surface and then modify for a radio slot.

Very interested for a place for a Ham face plate if this is a possibility.

Let us know Paul.

Unless you wanted a fancy trim kit, I don't think you necessarily need to custom fab anything to make this work. Just take the door off (requires pulling the larger assembly, then unscrewing the pocket from back side, then unscrew two hinge pins). Once you remove the door you can screw the pocket back on, and you've got a big hole you can fill with whatever.

I am considering putting my ScangaugeII up there, just need to get some more CAT5 for an extension cable. Here's a pic of the hole, and what it would look like if you put a Yaesu faceplate up there (FT-8800). to do this, all you'd need to do is screw your faceplate mount to that pocket, and there's plenty of room behind it for some screws to stick out.

But I personally wouldn't put a Ham radio faceplate up there. I have ridden in a few trucks who have this, and in each have drawn similar conclusions:

- adjusting the knobs is downright difficult while in motion, particularly the sensitive ones like volume and squelch. Tough to get fine dexterity when your arm is extended like that.

- the handset, which comes from the faceplate, hangs down like a trucker CB, unless you also run an extended cable and bring it out down below somewhere. I don't like seeing the coiled cord up there, or like it swinging around, just a distraction.

- Looking up is harder to do than looking down. I'm already used to looking down at the heater controls, shifters, stereo... so one more thing down there seems more natural. And when driving into the sun, it can make trying to focus on the radio all that more difficult. I personally think it's safer down below.

The best place, IMO, is just in front of the transfer case shifter. This allows you to keep the handset cords running down into the passenger foot well, and also rest your hand on the t-case shifter when making adjustments. If done right, you still have access to both 12v outlets.

I put my ham under the stereo head unit and the external speaker in the garage remote pocket. Super easy to manage the radio controls.

Paul,

What are you using the black knob for?

I currently have my Icom 208H head unit mounted up high on the sunroof side of the map light assembly...but got a 710A coming and thinking about its location being better served/easier to use like your's below the single DIN receiver (I originally had the 208H face mounted in front of the shifter below the ashtray...but it was tough to view/use too often because of stray light...).

Is there anyone who can confirm or deny that the sunglass holder from the '03 lineage of trucks will fit the 98-01 space that has the garage remote opening?

I'd love to have a sunglass holder up there!

Spresso that "knob" is my Bluetooth microphone. Check my build thread for details on mounting the dual radios. Super simple. Used the stock dual din mounting brackets. Only had to drill two holes.
