I run open pipes in my 40. But that is behind a turbo (which quiets things down considerably.)

A f/2f open is loud and obnoxious..

2.5" exhaust and a flowmaster..

I have a friend with a straight-piped 4-cyl. on a Heep, and the thing is fawkin' nauseating. I think I'll give him my glasspack after I pull it.

1phrogguy,
You are right about a loss of power due to little or no back pressure. This loss of power will be most notable in the mid range of the power band. The only way to go without a muffler is to use a turbo!!

Mace your a genius! Can you fab me one of those babies up for my tired old 22re? Hell I'll take one for the 2F too!

mine has a flowmaster with a little rock mod(sliced in the middle so you can see the guts)i cant wait to get a new muffler on it.because i cant hear s**t.

If you REALLY want to hear it, I've got a cherry bomb muffler the PO installed that bolts to a set of headers. I'll send it to you for the cost of the ride. ;)

Funny you should say that. With a stock manifold, mine wasn't too loud with no pipes at all. I drove it around for a couple days including a 25 mile trip to the muffler shop. I had it welded up to one of the POs dual 2" pipes. It now has two cherry bombs in series. I find that it's pretty quiet. The tranny and tires are both louder.

Once you reach the collector of the header, and further restriction is unneeded, and if you are looking for power, unwanted. Removing your muffler, or even your entire exhaust beyond the header WILL NOT cost you low end or mid range or any other power. Old wives tale based on lack of understanding of how the exhaust system works.

Yep, toss a turbo in the mix and that changes things. Open pipe behind a turbo can sound real nice and be acceptably quiet too.

I run a header and a Flowmaster and it sounds good. I wish I had gone with a Dynomax turbo. Just like the way the Dynomax sounds. Don't run it open or you can't come to the Crawl next year!

Later,

I'm running a Magnaflow with MAF 6-1 headers on my 2F (FJ55) and it has a nice rumble but not overpowered growl. I echo the sentiments above. Don't be a dumb redneck. Make sure you're reaching for optimal power, not big noises.

Cheers

x2, I ran Magnaflow on mine when I had a stock motor, I run two of them with my 350. I like them. Quite low rumble most of the time, but if I stomp on it, the rumble gets louder with good flow. One of the Texas Guys at Pismo this year even gave me a "Your rig sounds healthy" after he took some pictures of me running a sand bowl. He was even nice enough not to mention that it looks like crap.

If you're going to be wheeling in the wilderness or open space (designated trails), please put mufflers back on.

THere is no need for the obnixious sound of uncaped exhaust.

Noise levels are one of the many reasons trails are being closed. Please don't be a contibutor to closing great trails down for the sound of uncaped exhaust.

Just my .02$. I'm running headers and I'll have them plumbed right for lowering the sound.

Dude, i haven't even taken my muffler off, and i'm not going to so calm down.

I picked up a full stainless exhaust from a local cruiserhead, it has a cherrybomb sized muffler, gives a nice rumbly stainless note at idle, and quietish forklift note when revved, best you're going to get IMHO

(and it only cost 50 bones)

I have BBC, 3" dual exhaust, out the back, and 50 series flowmaster mufflers. I have not started this combination yet. I have used these mufflers in a 2 1/2" system and they had a nice sound. I used the 40 series flowmasters many years back and they were TOO loud. I remember riding with the top on and shooting style headphones on to dampen the noise. You can get some looks like that if you like.

I have to agree with a previous poster here. If your engine is even close to stock, keep it quiet. Only a true performance engine sounds good somewhat loud.

I ran a flowmaster 40 series for 2 years on my 79 behind a downey header and 2-1/4 exhaust. it sounded great under 2000 rpms, and got more annoying as the revs built up after that. I yanked it and put on a generic (thrush maybe) turbo muffler. Much better now. Still has a nice throaty sound, but it's not irritating. but my 5.0 mustang with headers, no cats, and full 2.5 inch exhaust with super turbo mufflers sounds way cooler. I love the way that car sounds.

That's what I run, nice throaty sound from the back but in the truck it is basically the same as the stock setup without the turbo.

This is on the 3B diesel though not a 2F.

I did the same for the FJ55 and I'll do the same for the FJ45LV when I get that far.

I've been pulled over by cops with the BJ60 and gone through the emissions testing and neither commented on the lack of a muffler (of course I did not point it out either).

For those who worry about back pressure and power, How many race cars or dragsters run mufflers or long pipes?

dont just stop at the sound, put one of these bad boys on there so you can SEE it is running as well

On my ride to work everyday, I pass by an old Ranger with a plow on it and one of those sticking out the back.
