Gotcha. So, I noticed that the engine skid plate is missing some of the m8 bolts. It’s not going anywhere but one side is sitting a little lower as a result and it’s bothering me. I also need the bolts that attach those plastic splash guards that attach to either side of it. Does those only need the m6 bolts? Or, are there additional fasteners? Thanks
The picture from the original poster has the diagram on what you need.

The M6 stuff listed should be all you need, if the plastic guards are still in place.

My plastic guards are cut up now for an aftermarket skid, if you get a good picture looking upward at the plastic guard and post it I can list the hardware needed. The M6 above is the main one that gets lost, but there are a couple other numbers depending on how they are still held in.

You’re missing more than just the plastic splash shield extensions. There are some formed plastic parts that extend down from the wheel well liner then bend forward to support the extensions.
I’ll try to take a pic of mine tomorrow if I can. bloc is right it goes on that open clip mount. Cool tow hooks though! What are they?

Oh dang, ok, that’d be great. The tow hooks are from arb.

This is the stock fender liner and plastic wing. I’m betting yours got cut down to avoid contact with the tires.

Thanks for the pics! super helpful. Yeah, it got it with 35s installed and I'm sizing down to 285/75/r17s. So, depending on how much more room I get in the wheel well, I'd like to re-install some of those plastic splash guards. If anyone is throwing theirs away, I'd be interested.

When I've done my first oil change, I went through the skid bolts replacement for my truck. I had this documented for my use and after seeing this thread I decided to add to it as some things are different.

My doc is based on LX Toyota diagrams. On my truck there were a few badly rusted and one wrong bolt but everything else matched the OEM diagrams. The part numbers, location, my and Toyota diagram, actual bolts pictures, bolt specs, and torque are in the PDF attached.

Just want to bump this with a thanks. For those of us that have had other folks do work, it is nice to get it back to how the factory had it.

I removed the plastic skid cover (will do the metal one tomorrow for under carriage rust protection) and saw two rubber washer come out. I have no idea where those should be placed.

No rubber washers for the skids themselves. Must be for something else.

Thanks so much for posting this!!

Would it surprise anyone in this forum if I said that I took mine in to *a dealer* a year (or two?) ago for an oil change and they didn't put back the mid section shield. Sadly, I didn't notice until a month or so later and of course they denied their involvement in the loss (I had done the oil change previously, so I knew damn well it was there). Now looking to put it back together right; anyone in Boston area have a used factory one sitting around after an upgrade? 2015 LX.

Does anyone know the part numbers for the skid plates by chance? Or did I overlook them...

LX and LC technically have different numbers as the LX comes with extra sound deadening.

That said, these are for 2008, but I don't think there are any changes through the years..

Main center shield under the engine & diff: 51420-60070
Includes oil change hatch
But if you need that separate: 51456-60070
Driver's side front: 51409-60030
Pass side front: 51408-60030
Center rib between two front shields: 51405-60200

Note that from the factory our front shields had a foam block under the radiator to ensure air can't bypass the core, I don't think these will come on the replacement front shields. If you want that (it's not cheap): 88578-60391 (apparently one needed per side)

Thank you for the information! It is greatly appreciated!

Thanks for putting this together as the factory diagrams are pretty vague. I was super confused when I pulled everything off to replace my starter as whoever was in there last seemed to use the purple and red bolts interchangeably so nothing was consistent.
Makes me wonder why one couldn’t just use the red bolts in lieu of the purple ones? Looking at the P/Ns, the purple ones are the same bolts for the 100 series front skid and large plastic plate under the tranny while the red bolts are the same part as all the skid and cross member bolts on the 4Runner/GX460. Since they are both M8 1.25 and the GX bolts are strong enough for the cross members, you’d think they’d be strong enough for the 100/200 series skid plates? The reason I ask is for those of us who have rigs with rusted fasteners, the red bolts are like less than half the price of the purple ones… like $1.50 vs $3.70… non-trivial when replacing dozens!

The holes for the purple bolts are larger diameter to allow for more misalignment, and the captive washers are much thicker and larger diameter as a result. In addition some of their locations clamp the composite under-engine plate, and they probably wanted more surface area from the washer to avoid crushing it.

The red bolts have a thinner washer that is a smaller diameter. These won’t clamp as much of the underlying material.

Toyota doesn’t often spend the money to develop whole different part numbers unless they thought it was necessary.
