Still searching, looked at a beautiful 04 LX and...rust!

No way to find one rust-free in NY it's just not happening. Not in STL either. I looked at few "locals" and all were rusty. Eventually I found mine (by accident) but it was in TX until 2015. It starts showing signs of rust now but I can live with it, very minimal and with some treatments will be OK for decade.

I would follow advice above on buying from CA/TX/etc. I personally would pay company to deliver. Last time I shipped BMW from CA (btw, can't buy classic BMW without rust either) in 2019 I paid $1100. To NY it will be <$2k to ship. IMO - worth it.

Not really looking for rust free, just rot free. I expect rust and I am used to it. I've been wrenching on rusted trucks over 30 years.

That should be very easy to find, but you likely have look outside the rust belt areas. These are reliable enough and durable enough that you can feel pretty confident about traveling cross country to pick one up if you have a hefty amount of pictures and a video of it running well. Of course, covid throws a loop in that plan right now.

Pretty sad as I really like these trucks and wanted one for quite a long time. I can deal with mechanical and cosmetic issues but the amount of rot I have seen is crazy. I have physically looked at many dozens of LCs, LXs and GXs and way more if you cou t phone calls and pics. While they run and drive great the rot is so bad. Not body rot, i can deal with that, frame, body mounts, springs, sway bars, structural components just crumbling in my hands. It's sad that they seem to be so well made but with inferior steel and/or treatment. I've had 5 jeeps for over 250k each, that travels and off road all over the country and never had anything close to what I have seen. My 300k suburban starting rusting after about 12 years but light surface rust, some under carriage bolts still have no rust. It looks incredibly good in comparison and it was originally a work truck for employees, a beach fishing and a boat tow rig.
Trying to decide if I should travel to get one, didn't really want to but maybe it's the only way. But then how fast is it going to rot when I get it home.
There's one for sale in Georgia at the top of the page now for $9200 or so.

This. Dont know what to tell you OP. Especially if you think they are worse than those mid 2000's Chevy's.

And I am from Syracuse. I know rust.

It's not what I think, I have looked at many and my 04 burb is is in better shape as far as rot, and with 300k. I don't trust the newer GMs and really wanted a Toyota. I have even looked a sequoia's.

I found a CA 100 that the previous owner had driven from Santa Monica to take up a new job in NYC.
185k miles, no rust but a lot of sun damage in interior.
Got it at a PA pre owned dealer.
I read all the carfaxs & when I saw this one, I was at the dealers when the business opened the next day.

I had looked at literally hundreds of listings before I found ours.
They are available, it just takes a lot of searching.

Two of us have given you a southern 100 Series (GA) that is for sale on MUD in this Forum. There are two things going for you Sir. Only your fingers have to travel on the keyboard to get a dialog started.

Dig bruh! They’re out there but there’s not a line of socal retired soccer moms ready to give you a low mileage soccer mobile/church wagon for 7k.

If you’re not year specific, two guys have posted 02 and older but 03-07 that is rust free is going to require swift execution, A longer road trip/plane trip, and a bigger Stack of cash. You’re also going to be up against flippers looking to do a quick maintenance and turn a profit. Example

If you want it bad enough, you'll do anything to get it. If you don't want it, you'll make every excuse not to get it.

To get mine, i overpaid for next day air fare, did some favors to coworker to cover my absence, did zero negotiation, and trust my gut that this is a good purchase according to the service records. Nobody is just going to hand you the keys and title, you gotta go out and get it. These trucks are rare, even more rare when they're in good shape because people are waiting to scoop them up.

Location: NY

Yeah, that's gonna be a tough find for you locally.

I searched for over 2 years to find the right truck. Ended up flying to FL and driving it 1400 miles back. Patience is key

I can understand how buying remotely can be scary, but this is not hard:
1) find nice truck not in rust belt
2) ask for detailed photos
3) make an offer contingent on a PPI, or ask a local Mudder to go have a look.
4a) buy cheap round trip tickets, inspect truck yourself, buy truck, deliver beer to Mudder, make a new friend, and drive home
4b) same, but buy a truck FROM a Mudder
5) Get it to where you want it, and either park it in the winter or coat the sh!t out of it with Fluid Film every fall.

I literally did the same thing here The cross-country boys trip to get our Cruiser.... We made a trip out of it and took my son, had a great time in South Florida and drove it all the way back to Kansas City. We got a 119K mile 2006 LX, no rust, only dealer maintained for $16,000, which was two years ago. They are out there but be prepared to move fast. I think if you want a deal on the right truck, you have to also be prepared to travel or have it shipped, it just opens up more inventory.

Where are you guys looking for these that they are super rare and expensive if rust free?

Sounds like majority here will buy any year, any mileage 100 series as long as it's in one piece and rust free.

These get expensive when you look at the 03+ models and lower mileage, but every time I go on Craigslist and search for these things (just for fun), I pretty much always find several at any given time under $10,000 in the Southwestern states. Sure they're the older models and higher mileage with lots of sun damage and crappy interiors, but if you want rust free, those meet your criteria.

Everyone is looking for the unicorn:

Land cruiser, 5 speed, no AHC, one owner, dealer maintained, desert rig, low miles, no nav, white, no body damage, no wood interior

Under $14k, which is KBB listed price.

This isn't a 250GTO. Toyota made lots of them. There are 5 LX470s and 2 LC100s on my regional Craigslist. I bet none of them have rust. Even discounting those hoping for an FJ40 gold mine, there are still plenty left to pick from. Phoenix example & Another one 10 mins from home.

Be as picky as you need to be to find something you are going to be happy with, but I see no need to spend extra months/years looking for unobtanium at fire sale prices. If it costs a little extra to love what you bought, go for it and keep it a long time. 100s are great value, but that doesn't make them cheap. They were never designed to be - love them for what they are.

Find an honest seller with a nice truck, make an honest offer and move on with life. IMO, no rust is worth the premium and hassle.
