So the oil is coming out of the correct place and there is no oil leaking on the floor when the chainsaw is not in use. I assume this is a venting problem?

My original oil cap cracked in the middle (sticking a screwdriver in the slot to open it) so I replaced it with a new one - might not be original Stihl - but it does seem to fit. The other place is the little silver circle with the hole in it. I believe this is the vent.

Any way I can figure out which (or something else) might be the cause of this? I took the bar and chain off and started it up, the bar oil just pours out and eventually runs down around the sprocket area and turns black and I get some smoke.

Thanks for any help.

Is it coming out the oiler hole or is it coming out of the hole that has the Orange plug in the picture below next to the muffler?

Raymond, since this is your first post, you may not realize that you just hit the jackpot. There is absolutely nothing that Dan does not know about Stihl saws.... Heck, I think he knows about Stihl saws that haven't been designed yet! :D You are out of the woods, my friend!

I should add that I love my 025. Has been going strong for 20+ years or so. A very nice size. Only had to change the fuel line once I think. And maybe not even that, not sure, I have several Stihls...

I am having a hard time figuring out where that orange plug is. I "think" it's coming from different sources. It is definitely coming out of the oiler hole but it looks like it's also coming from somewhere else. Another thing I noticed is that little metal rod that spins around turns the worm gear for the pump - that metal piece - is not catching the clutch cover which has two small notches in it.

I think I am going to have to remove the clutch to see what is going on. I just ordered that piston stop tool so that I can take it off. I'll report back when I have more info. Thank you.
