Yep, and still alive. I guess I´ll just respond to this insead of making a seperate thread. I felt the earthquake. I was southwest of San Felipe. I didn´t think it was a big deal ... apprently it was. Check out the pics at ... BajaNomad Forums - "Peace, Love & Fish Tacos"

So far things have been almost perfect. Weather has been nice. Chilly early in the week, but it has warmed up nicely now. I´m in Bahia de los Angeles and just finished taking a nice cold shower, but at least I have a real bed for tonight. I will also let somebody else make me dinner.

The road to Mission Santa Maria was as good as ever. Problem is, when I finally reached the oasis the road was questionable with deep water and big submerged holes, so I didn´t make it to the mission. I think I could have made it though, but without a wingman I wasn´t going to try. There is a guy that lives at Santa Inez where the trail starts. I´ve meet him every time I´ve been down there. Ralph said he saw my tracks going in and since I had been there for several days was about to drive in to make sure I was OK. Glad he didn´t need to. That road is a bitch. Love it.

The week has been spent camping in palm canyon. The rest of the week will be on the beach. Hopefully, the road north will be fixed enough to get through. Miss you all NOT!

I must have missed it, but I'm assuming that Da'40 is tucked away in the garage?

Dan

I'm thinking he's in the "expedition vehicle" aka the 4Runner.

Thanks for the update, Jon! Have a great time on the beach.

Wow - I just checked out the links to the quake pics. Some of those could swallow up a Toyota! At least you're in better shape than most in your 4Runner - you can wheel the obstacles right there on the highway.

Just a few observations on the earthquake. I came back through Mexicalli on Sunday. Damage was very evident just south of town. There were buildings collapsed and small tent villages were set up. Many houses, all adobe, had severely cracked walls.

They were still fixing the roads. Most of the major damage was fixed. There were still spots with cracks, and sunken sections. There was one 1 inch ledge I dropped off of on the way up that was not fixed yet.

There is a toll road that by-passes the town going east. It had several over-passes that were damaged, one significantly. I didn't get the camera out fast enough and there was traffic making it hard to pull off. I will try to describe the damage.

This over-pass was built like ours ... to some degree. One end of the over-pass was "fixed" meaning it didn't float. The other end of the over-pass was built to float. In other words it was not structurally attached to the adjacent side and was allowed to move in an earthquake. Well, it moved all right. There was about a 2 foot separation/gap.

There were two columns on either end as well. Just to the outside of each column the bridge was cracked all the way through. It looks like the over-pass had bounced on top of the column and when it came down it cracked. The road was not flat on top. All of the over-passes were built exactly the same, and they all had the same damage to some degree.
