I know I could do that, I just would like to minimize the amount of oil coming out of the engine. It leaks pretty bad at WOT.
I also don't want to dump a bunch of oil wherever I drive or wheel.

There are a bunch of pillow block bearings laying around at work, and tuning a shaft down for one would only take a couple minutes so I'm gonna give it a shot. Worst comes to worst I'd only waste a couple hours of my time.

I just wanted to get some input as to whether or not my idea made sense.

I don't think it will work, but if you have the stuff laying around, then the only thing you'd lose is time.
 
After thinking about it some more, I decided to bite the bullet and get some new main bearings.

It wasn't too pricey, Its just going to take more time than I wanted to spend on fixing this motor. I'm gonna try replacing the bearings in the truck.

Are there any issues with replacing the main bearings while the engine is in the truck?
 
Bearings are here, I'm going to install them tomorrow.

I'll try to take a bunch of pictures to help out anyone else who plans on replacing bearings with the engine in the truck.

New bearings are in, it only took about 4 hours to swap them out. It turns out my #1 bearing was spun, and bearings 2 and 3 were pretty tore up as well.
I need to replace my front seal again but once that's finished I should be all set motorwise until I swap the cummins in.
I'm just excited to be able to drive it on the road.

Wow, those things were shot! Good thing you decided to replace them.
 
Yeah, in the end it really was a good idea.
The crankshaft doesn't wobble all over the place now.

It also wasn't too bad to do the work either. It was intimidating to start but once I got rolling I realized it was pretty straightforward.

Yeah, that pulley was really messed up, I probably should have checked my rod bearings but oh well. All its gotta do is last me the summer and then its time for the diesel swap.:D
 
So when I went to replace my timing cover seal I was very disappointed to find that the new pulley I bought has a groove worn in it from the minimal amount of time I had it installed. :bang:
I seriously ran the motor for no more than 5 minutes with this new pulley in an figured it shouldn't get any wear in that time. Apparently I was wrong about that

All I have been trying to do for the past month is get this problem fixed and it seems that no matter what I do there is always an issue. I just want to be able to drive my truck around, is that so much to ask for?

Hopefully I can repair this one at work, and source another pulley to replace it in case the repair job does not work.

So why are you getting the abnormal wear? Repairing or replacing the damaged pulley will not correct the problem and apparently your motor is wearing through pulleys fast enough that you can't drive to the grocery store before springing another leak. What could possibly cause this wear?

I understand your frustration man. I can't for the life of me get an intake manifold to seal against the head properly:mad:
 
I have no idea what the pulley is wearing on, I assumed it is wearing where the pulley passes into the timing cover due to the bad bearings.

Now with the bearings replaced, hopefully the next pulley I put back in won't wear like the last two. But if anyone has any ideas to what the pulley might be wearing down on please let me know so I can look into it.
 
all i have to say stevo is WOW! you have done an amazing job on your rig. it looks awesome man i cant wait till mine looks like that. im doing th e5.3 vortech and 4l60e swap after the 3fe dies. but that probly wont be for a while haha. keep it up, ill be tuning back in.

Hey thanks a lot. It really is nice to get the compliment, especially with all of the issues I have had recently.

I hope everything goes well with your planned swap, I'll be sure to tune in when it happens.
 
Repaired harmonic balancer. Hopefully there won't be any issues when I install it later.

Although there looks to be a groove its just a rough spot from turning, i'll hit that with some scotch brite before it goes on the truck.

So even after all of the work I had put into the engine in order to try to keep it alive, it decided to quit on me tonight as I went for a spin in it after replacing the harmonic balancer. That being the case I am forced to go ahead with the diesel swap I had planned.

I just wanted to take the time to thank all those that have tuned into this thread and helped out with all of the questions that I have had while building this truck to what it is today. I hope you tune into the next phase of my build as well. Due to the nature of it, I felt it would be more fitting to have it in the Hardcore section.
