This is so freakin awesome. I just bought the newer model Pioneer (4100) and was wanting to add a camera or two to the back. I like the component speaker install too. I just got my first 80 recently and my wife is gonna kill me when she sees all the things I am gonna do to it.

Copy that on the 4100 I love mine.

Snake Eater,
Awsome set up. I am working on a set up like Teach to fly did with the belly cam and was thinking of a video switcher to add more cameras, but I like your 6 position switch. Any chance you can post up where you sourced the switch and a rough wire diagram?

It's a basic 2-pole/6 position rotary switch (about $3 bucks @ Radio Snack)

Wiring is straight forward once you're looking at it :meh:

2 terminals in the middle is for output and the input leads use matching terminals that are set apart 180*, so the switch contacts both terminals at the same time when the knob is turned

Just make sure you use the correct polarity when wiring up the cams and you'll be good to go :)

Fixed but I'm not surprised since it was 3 mos old.

If you aren't into the do it yourself stuff ... try this 4 into 1 switcher
Accelevision AVS400 Car Video A/V Switcher, 1 A/V Output, 4 A/V Inputs

Just ordered my Pioneer 4100. Looking into doing a multi-camera install too!

How are you guys routing the wiring from the HU to the exterior of the vehicle?

For the front, I used the passenger side firewall grommet and for the rear, I used one of the grommets in the right rear quarter panel well....

Wiring is tin shielded 4 wire conduit cable and I just cut to fit and solder/heatshrink...

Very cool

Snake,

What is that box thingy sitting on top of your radio HU?

It's a 7 speaker Center Channel unit (5.1 system)

So that unit on top of the HU, is part of the HU or an add-on?

Specs/links on the Center Channel unit would be cool.

Where your center speaker? specs?

Thanks, Snake.

Saw this rotary switch at RS the other day while picking up some stuff for another project...question is, how did you get the knob on it? The shaft looks to be about 1.25" long. Did you just cut the shaft down in order to fit the knob? Just curious is all.

The rotary knob lets me switch from camera to camera (6 positions) while using only one Aux. input on the HU...

Never having done an A/V install such as this before, I need your help. I’d like to add a switch to control 2 or 3 cameras (no need for 6 at the moment, but I’ll probably go ahead and wire up for all 6 just in case) and I’m curious about the 1st photo of your wiring above.

I believe I understand the working of the switch - 12 pins on the outer ring make up the 6 positive and 6 negative corresponding 180 deg input posts and the 2 inner pins are the master positive and negative output posts. Wire the 6 camera RCA plugs so they match the 12 outer pos & neg pins correctly and then wire the 2 inner pos & neg pins in such a way that you only have one RCA plug that goes to the Video output on the HU.

Question is, why do you have 2 video outputs for this switch? (The 2 red RCA plugs I see pictured.) Don’t you only need one aux input to control all 6 cameras? Or is the 2nd RCA plug to work your visor monitors?

Oh and how do you have this 2nd RCA plug wired inline with the other one? Did you just tapp it into the other?

Hope I’m not being too confusing! Just trying to wrap my head around this. :D

I added the second output by piggyback...

One goes to the HU while the other will eventually go to a DVR, so the HU doesn't have to be on to record

Me and xcmountain got to talking today and thought it would be cool if some how a user could listen to the music thru either the radio/ipod/CD of the HU and at the same time, watch video on the display from the back up camera (or other selectable cameras for that matter).

Anyone know of a hack or work around for these Pioneer HUs that would allow this possibility? It would be nice to be able to flip between cameras while driving down the road and never hear a break in the music.

Not sure about the Pioneer HU, but on my Sony, I have a secondary switch tied into the reversing signal :)

Bascially, I took the reverse trigger wire that would usually tap into the reverse light circuit and added a switch to it.

When I hit the switch, the HU screen shows whatever camera the rotary switch is turned to while the rear monitors continue to play whatever DVD is on (or tuner continues to play music)
