Have a look at this.
It happened as I pulled in to the driveway yesterday.

One hour before this I was doing 65 down the hwy.

No idea why it broke.
Its only 44 years old now :hhmm:

It has been going for awhile now.
Half of the break was rusted.

Time to go Power steering.

Anyone offer up suggestions on a donor to look for. Please.
Parts are not as easy to find here in CR.
Have done the treads on the tec.
No 68 impalas here.

All I need is some models and year to look for and will see about stripping a package out.

I know why it broke. In your driveway....The 'Cruiser Gods were smiling on you. If they were pissed at you, it WOULD have broke while you were doing 65, in a turn, near a high steep cliff....
If I were you, I would slaughter a fatted calf, burn a candle and do something very, very nice for your LandCruiser.

Holy crap!!! Glad to see that you are still alive. I agree do something nice for your cruiser.

Holy crap is right.

If there's ever a reason to clean your rig and really inspect it every so often, this is it!

Very lucky nobody got hurt. Absolutely amazing pictures.

Maybe a PO had wanted to bend the pitman arm - and did the deed "in place" and "without heat" (maybe with a sledge hammer?) ---- although if that was the case, I would have expected the bracket to break then rather than now.

Scary!!!

(I find it hard to believe that this could occur without the bracket having received a "big knock" sometime in its life.)

A good time to up-grade.........

Saginaw Scout box which would mount behind the driver front tire on the side of the frame...... or Minitruck off a toyota pickup if you dont have real large tires (it would mount on the side of the frame also) or regular chevy saginaw box that mounts at the front bumper. Either way glad your OK!!

Check the tech section at the top of the screen under the steering section....it will give you a lot of different ideas and then if you need any further help there are some smart cookies on here such as Orangefj45 that can help you with pitman arms etc....... One thing about it your going to get an oppurtunity to get rid of a lot of other 30 year old steering parts no matter which method you choose

I had the same on my '67 FJ45LV when I bought it. I had broken in the past at EXACTLY the same place. The PO had welded it back together but I pulled it. I don't really trust welded cast iron in these situations especially when the welding looks like popcorn. I think I have a replacement one waiting for me at my bro's place in Sacramento. I'm staying OEM on my 'LV, at least in the steering.

I will do something nice:

I promise.:wrench::wrench::wrench:
Will invest in Power steering asap.
Giver him new t-case clean the paint buy lotto tickets.
Will set the trap tonight and slaughter the cats that like to piss on the seats.
And more....

Ya freaking weird it blew as I pulled into the driveway.

If any of you know this place it is not the kind of place you want the steering to fail.

I am supposed to be heading over the mnts to the Caribbean coast for a job next week.
Trailer with a ton and the familia would be the end of us all.

This might be a heads up for any of you running a pre 70s system like this.
As Cruiser guy states He had one fail also.
so this is not a freak thing.

I have since put a mount and box off a 55 I had in a bucket here.
Will use it till I can find a power conversion this week.
Have put the word out and hopefully Buddy here will hook me up.

Must be porosity in the casting is my guess.
I recently put on some 10 wide rims & 33x12 tires.
Maybe this put stress on this part.
Cast Iron is sketchy stuff at the best of times.
Should have been cast steel not iron.

I know I have never hit it.
Not untill I had to take it off Friday Afternoon.

Cheers to the cruiser Gods.
