Starting problem...no ticking, no nothing....dead as a doornail

First thing I would do is check the amps on the battery. Even if it is reading 12 volts the amps may not be there. I worked on a boat the other day with a new battery and cleaned every connection and checked everything twice. The battery was reading 13 volts but had less that 10 amps. Hope that is all that is wrong.

Thinking more on this topic, both a "failing" fusable link and a worn plunger in the starter could not work with one battery but work with the extra amps from two batteries. A fusable link is cheap, and it never hurts to have an extra one around. Starters can be tested at most auto parts places for free, though I'm not sure if they can test for a failing plunger. However, the replacement parts to refurbish a starter(plunger + contacts) are cheap, and the repair time is short, and all older starters need the work done anyway as PM.

Just had the same problem on my 62. Had my battery tested at local auto place and came back fine, but once in the truck, same problem. Toyota said the battery had a bad cell, so they put in a new Toyo battery and no problems for two days now.

Any luck Lilblue?

Can some one explain to me how a fusible link can be dead with one battery and then amaziningly alive, healthy and perfect with another battery?

I have been ruminating on the problem. I need to test the link and ignition switch....and check into the battery quality, etc. I'll let you all know what i find!

If the fusable is "failing" it could have very high resistance. That is, it's hard for electricity to "push" through the wire. If you push hard enough (two batteries) then enough gets through to fire up the starter.

Hotwire it - see if that starts it. That works around both the fusable and the ignition.
