Do you have the High idle problem?

I also had a sort of growl for a split second at around 1200 -1400 rpm at startup.

Once I did the 2 oil ring IAC mod, the startup idle never has been above 1000 rpm again so no growl, so mabe the root case isn't fixed bit at least it's masked.

Hmmmm........mine cold idles quite high. I just started it and it cold idles at 1700RPM. I let in run for a minuteand it's still at 1700RPM.

A/C off or on, same RPM
Temp outside about 55 degrees.

Is this bad?

"Is this bad."

IMO yes.

I did the 2 oil ring mod to lower my startup RPM to 1000 and after 30 seconds to 650 rpm. The growl IMO is a lack of oil pressure or oil delivery at startup. I thought that if I lowered the RPM at startup at least it wouldn't do as much damage, but I could be totally off base.

Anyway please do a search for words such as "high idle" "iac" starting at the end of SEP, 2004. You will also find a link around ~oct 2 - 7 that explains what to do if some of the parts fall out. You can also search on my username around those dates.

There's a detailed link to www.4x4.com (< that's just part of the link) that has a instruction on how to do the mod. It's about a 3 hour deal if you have to pull the TB off, but still pretty easy.

OK all. Thanks for your responses. Here's what I've figured:

Noise NEVER occurs when cold starting when the AC button is off.
Noise OFTEN occurs right at start when the AC button is on.

Since I figured the above I tried this:

Cold start with AC off...no noise. Then, right after start push the AC button to on, and WA LA....SCREECH/GRIND noise is there for a split second then gone until the next morning.

Ideas? (Remember I recently had the AC idler bearing (whatever ya call it) replaced.

Sounds like the A/C clutch is slipping. If it has too much gap you maybe able to shim it, but probably better off just replacing it.

Kevin: Is the clutch different than the idler? The idler was loud when the engine was running (bearing noise from age) so it was replaced. This new starting sound came about a week after. J

The idler tensions the belt, it lives on the bracket. The clutch is the pulley on the compressor, engages the compressor.

It could also be the compressor starting to lock-up. It is almost surely the compressor/clutch combination. Also check the refrigerant charge, an over charged system puts a lot of strain on the compressor when it kicks in.
