Hi All,

First time rebuild, and most of it was apart when I bought it:doh:.

Since the engine was out when I got it, i'm not 100% sure it will run (85K on it). So before I put it all back togehter, i would like to try and start it. I replaced all the gaskets, changed the oil & hoses, plugs, points, rotor & cap, etc.

I have the coil, gas lines, starter and radiator to still put back.

I have two questions:

What else do i need to hookup to make sure it "runs".

What minimal wiring is required? I know that i saw a thread on this somewhere but can't seem to find it again.

Thanks!

it can be done!

in this setup i had a DUI distributor so it might be a little easier than what you got but here's what i did.

+from bat: wire to idle solenoid on carb
wire to the coil/dizzy
wire to the starter

- from bat: wire to the block/frame

fuel was a funnel

i also put a spoonful or two of motor oil into the cylinders a day or two before and cranked the motor over a couple of times using the starter each day before i started it - you want to do this if it has sat for a long time.. good luck!

EDIT you need to install the COIL and the STARTER but not the RADIATOR - just don't let it run for more than a minute or so

I went and bought a cheap universal ignition switch and wired mine up to that. Turn the key on and off and start it, can leave it wired up and take the key and do not have to worry about the kids. What type of Distributor you have is the only hard part. I use my switch on my 62 all the time, but I started to hook it up to my 1980 and could not get a spark, was not sure about the distributor, but realized all the spark plug wires had corroded away so just rolled it back in the garage for another day. If you get it wired up post some pictures so when I get back to the 1980 it might help me. The old 1F' was simple like stated above.

Why not install the radiator?

Bruce, I'm about to do the same thing with my fresh rebuild. It's a race!

Ant - How long did that sit, it fired right up! Love the funnel. I was planning on just sticking the gas hose in a 5 gal can. Thanks!

CJ - i didn't even think of that, I have a box of on/off switches left over from a past life, i can just use one of those (my kids are older....oh wait).

Jeff - Next weekend is my b'day, and I get the entire weekend to myself. You better get moving!

you can install the radiator but you do not have to - should have clarified that

previous owner had it for 3 years or more i think and i had it for a bout 6 months - i'm not sure if the owner before him even saw it run but the motor itself had very light surface rust and was very clean!

so to answer your question.. i'm not sure!

no spark

Hi All,
I wired the starter, no problems.

I then wired the battery to the top positive side of the coil pack. I did not go directly to the positive side of the coil, i read that you needed to go through the resister and I'm thinking that is what I am doing. In the image, this is the post on the top left side (there is a "+" right beside this post).

I then went directly from the negative on the coil to the distributor.

Does this sound right or am I missing something?

Thanks

The way that you wired the coil/dizzy should work. If you're only going to run it briefly, the resistor is not needed. In fact, if you bypass the resistor, you'll get a hotter spark and it'll start easier. The other thing that you will want to do is to wire the fuel cutoff solenoid on the carb. Just connect it to the battery and you'll be all set.

If it were my engine, I'd hook up the radiator.

Good luck. A can of this might help too:
