Hi,
This is a 1974 FJ40 with wiring from scratch, so while the manual is helpful, I am making fresh diagrams for this as I go. I have a replacement new starter from SOR. It has the two large lugs, one male spade terminal and one female spade terminal on a black wire and white connector.

Does the 12v from the starter switch go to the silver male spade terminal on the body of the solnoid? Or to the black wire with the white female terminal?

Thanks!

The FSM is your friend:

Thanks for the reply, and I have the FSM but my wiring is completely from scratch and doesnt resemble that diagram. Also my starter from SOR doesnt resemble that diagram. My solnoid terminals are not labelled 30 50 or C, and the picture above doesnt show a connection with a short wire with a female spade terminal.

+ from your coil will attach to the male spade terminal—if you have a ballast resistor it will connect there vs being connected directly to the + terminal on the coil. I suspect the black wire with the female spade terminal is for an “exciter wire”. You can search exciter wire and see what its all about. Short version is it helps with starting in cold weather—I think a lot of later model 40s don’t even have them so that does not need to be connected. If you have it, the exciter wire attaches directly to the + terminal on your coil.

MadMace and 73FJ40, thanks for taking the time to read and reply, but I am asking a much easier question...I do not have a separate coil, resistor or exciter. I have a DUI distributor and have that switched properly.

I am only asking which terminal on the starter should get +12V when I want the starter solnoid to engage and crank the motor. The spade male on the solnoid body, the black wire with the white female spade terminal, or another connection I am not seeing?

Thanks!

I’m fairly certain the extra connection is for resistor bypass which your 74 came with originally. The extra connection gets energized only when the solenoid is activated. When at rest that extra connection is not connected to anything. The auxiliary contacts inside the solenoid are open at rest. Therefore, if you connect 12v to the wrong one, nothing will happen. So, it’s safe to simply try each one. It would also make sense that the spade terminal gets connected to your ignition switch since the white connector is protected/insulated where if it is not used for ballast bypass, it still gets hot when cranking. For a test, I would just jump that spade terminal to the battery terminal right next to it and watch it crank. Out of gear of course.

Maybe a pic would help , im assuming that the red or the white wire terminates at the battery ,

to help with the rest ,

blue should be wired to your coil to supply 12v + to the coil while cranking

red is the plunger wiring terminal , and should be wired to the ignition switch to provide the control for the starter via ur key.

Pull it out from the rig and put it on your workbench, grab some jumper cables and make some connections to see what does what.

My excerpt from the FSM shows the connection between the solenoid and battery at 12:00, ballast resistor bypass at 3:00, feed to starter at 6:00, connection from ignition switch to solenoid at 9:00.

If you're convinced your special starter is different, I suggest you ask for guidance from your supplier.

The male terminal appears to be your start wire from the ignition switch. You don't need the female one on your application due to the DUI distributor
