And finally took the trailer for a road test, 70mph on the highway, 50mph on a gravel road, trailer towed well. Only problems i had is the fact that i have no weight in the trailer and no shocks mounted yet, trailer was very bouncy in town.

B B B B Bad, B B B B Bad, B B B B Bad, Bad to the Bone!!!!!

Awesome stance...looks like it would carry the truck, nice work!

I love this build!

On your independent suspension are you concerned about castor and camber as far as wheel alignment goes? What did you end up using for bushings? Did you install the complete straight axle and then cut it?

I would like to try and build a similar set up but some of the reading I have done on suspensions has me second guessing the idea. I don't know how important those adjustments would be on a trailer.

Hey Dude,

I started off with a straight axle made the trailing arms and mounts on the frame then cut the axle. For the bushings i purchase the hub shells and the bushing from metal tech, the bushing are from jeep xj lower control arm.

The first road test was a bit scary, trailer was very bouncy in town (no shocks and 35" mud kings) and having the lock and roll hitch, i knew that if it wanted to roll over it could. Over all the trailer towed very straight, I will find a set of shocks next time i am home then try the road test again.

Scott,
Ive been watching your trailer build and am very impressed. So impressed that I went out and got the steel to build a pair of my own trailers!!!!! (after seeing the price of the AT!)
Have you been able to make any more progress since your test drive? I am really curious about the bushings you used for the trailing arms. Are they rubbber or poly or... I need to find the bushings to continue my build. Thanks for the help! Looking forward to more progress!

Build's progressing nicely! On your fenders, do you think you have enough clearance for the tires once the trailer is fully loaded?

Great thread and awesome build.

If I could built something like that, I'd take it over to the galvanizers to give it some lifetime protection.

It deserves it!

Hey Everybody,

Thanks for all the great comments on the trailer build, I have not made much progress since the test drive. Way to many projects on the go at the same time, finally got gas line and heater installed in the garage last week.

I will be back on the trailer build in a few weeks, plan is to have one of them ready for spring, then do some testing to make sure the suspension and everything else works properly. Before finishing the second trailer, in time for some summer time road/offroad trips.

Hey Exiled,

Thanks, the one picture with the tire up in the fender, is with no air in the bags (bags bottomed out) so clearance should not be an issue. Also the tires I have for the trailer are 33x10.5 BFG mud terrains, trailer is pictured with 35X12.5 mud kings.

Hey Dion,

Sent you a pm, the bushing I used are lower control arm bushing from a Heep XJ, bought them and the machined hub shell from Metal Tech. They are rubber, figure if they can last for years in the front end of an XJ they should last for ever in this light weight trailer.

Thanks,

Scott

great job.

I'm excited to see the finished product as well.

Side question, where did you get the wheels that are on that trailer?

They look like GM Rally wheels off of an 1/2 ton pickup or Blazer.

bump for an update!

Hey STB,

Did you get your Hannibal RTT from the distributer in Edmonton? I can't find him anymore. Guess he closed the doors?? Hannibal doesn't list a Canadian distributer at all now.:meh:

I tried to call about their American Dealer, and they don't deal with them anymore either!!

Man.. I wish I would have grabbed a tent when they were going out!!
