Loud squealing when cold. I thought maybe it was the belt but maybe it is the fan clutch after observing it for a while now and checking tension on the belts. Is it possible for a fan clutch to squeal?

1993 FZJ80, 4.5 gasser, 309K miles, no idea if the fan clutch had ever been replaced. I replace the belts regularly. This set was done just last July with Toyota belts.

Anything with a failing bearing might make noise when cold initially, then the noise may become continuous as it wears out, IME. Also check the AC tensioner pulley, idler pulley, alternator, AC compressor, PS pump, ----.

Post up a link to a video clip with the noise.

It's usually old belts.

Remove the belts and start up cold and see if it squeals Dont let it run too long with out belts. If it does you can blame the clutch fan. If not then spin anything connected to belts. Look for issues.
