Ya, that maintenance schedule is pretty demanding. If I had one and was going to Moab I’d have to drop the shaft and grease it before I left, drop it and grease it before leaving Moab and then drop and grease it when I got home.

I don’t think I have the fortitude to keep up with that schedule. And neither do others which is likely responsible for early failure.
I agree, part time is a better option imo...

From a 4 Runner FSM: note the recommendation for a Moly fortified grease
for the slip yolks and the Double Cardan joint.

FWIW

Got any kind of front end vibration- part time the truck.

Don’t want to buy a DC front shaft, part time the truck.

Bought a DC shaft and don’t like the maintenance schedule, part time the truck.
Yep, I guess technically it doesn't fix the problems. But they are only problems when your going highway speeds.

I had taken my rig wheeling and forgotten to unlock the hubs. Than I left the country for a month, returned, and proceeded to drive up the interstate...... I was like "oh s***, that's a new vibration" stopped for gas after 50 miles and realized the hubs were still locked. Turning those hubs was a damn easy repair 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

Im having this exact noise right now, very bad on accel, but once youre off throttle its silent. I KNOW my noise is not belts, i was getting worried and i found this thread. Ill grease mine tomorrow and report back with results, fingers crossed. Front tom woods dc drive shaft, for reference.

I would have bet money this wasnt going to fix my noise, but it did.. I greased the center section of the dc, not just the u-joints. You DO need a needle fitting to inject grease, i coudlnt do it in the truck, due to my belly skids, but easy enough anyway. Until i found this thread, i didnt even know that was a serviceable part.. iluvmud!!

Picture is pre-grease…

Just because I am curious…..this is just for the Tom Woods double cardan front drive shaft correct? The OEM DS doesn’t have a 4 th zero fitting…..correct? I don’t think I saw a 4th zero fitting but just want to be sure.

Stock driveshafts/U-joints for a FZJ80 do not have a double Cardan joint, but any vehicle with a double Cardan joint should have that separate zerk fitting that needs a Moly fortified grease.

I've posted this up in another thread but FWIW I've made my own "boosted" Moly grease with a high percent Moly to use for slip yolks (and Birfields) and would do the same for a Double Cardan joint, but just for for that one center fitting.

IME you can use any Lithium base automotive grease then add Loctite LB-8012 Moly Lubricant (65% Molybdenum disulfide) in whatever ratio you want ie: 2-4 parts grease to ~1 part LB-8012), stir it up good then stuff the mixture into a small grease gun dedicated to that center fitting on your Double Cardan joints and grease them as required. I would not use the high-percent Moly grease on regular U-joints with pin bearings however (could be used for the slip yolks).

The Mobilith SHC460 is rated as NLGI #1.5 but the synthetic lubricating oil in the grease is twice the viscosity of most automotive greases. Adding the LB-8012 thickens the grease up a bit. Note: The photo below does not show the final grease to Moly ratio (I added more red grease after taking the photo)

If you use a boosted Moly grease in the center zerk fitting (only!) of the Double Cardan joints it should stop all squeaks from that center socket, IMHO.
