Good grief what? It isn't a big project. You can do it!

I was installing a battery heater and had my main battery unplugged and wanted to open the rear hatch.
I found that the buttons on the hatch don’t work if there is no power (obvious but not something I had thought of before).

So what happens if your battery dies and you need to open that hatch (I keep my jumper cable in a drawer back there)?
Is there a way to open the hatch without power?
Well, if you let your battery die to the point that you can't use the door locks you will need to use your physical key to get in. Might want to check that it works. But you won't be able to get to the hatch without getting to the physical release which is no small feat. So if this is something that concerns you, I'd keep your jump pack somewhere up front.

The manual release for the rear hatch is behind the little square panel on the inside of the hatch. THere is a screw you have to remove and then you can slide a little white piece of plastic. Someone posted pictures around here recently.

Ah… I wasn’t thinking about how dead the battery wound need to be for the doors to stop working.
But all the same, I guess I will keep my jump pack elsewhere - just in case.

And thank you for the information about where the manual release is. I was hoping it was something obvious that I was overlooking.

Question: Does my truck have VGRS?
  • under-hood fuse box lid indicates spot 24 for 40 amp fuse for VGRS
  • fuse spot 24 has been unoccupied while I've owned the truck (other gremlins had priority)
  • went to add fuse and found only one prong coming up from the fuse block (old one broke off/was never there because vehicle does not have VGRS)
  • truck steering on highway is extraordinarily sensitive, with much weaving if careless, which I assumed was due to missing fuse (VGRS off)
  • unclear from VIN-based parts lookup if VGRS was option or standard for 2008 model year
  • don't see the visual indicators of VGRS presence, but I've only found those pictures on the 100-Series forums, so could be a false indicator
Hypotheses:
  • VGRS introduced to 200-Series after 2008 model (searched everywhere, but no direct evidence found)
  • PO removed VGRS for reasons driven by judgement under which other #(&%$# decisions were made

Pretty sure you have VGRS. Not sure on the fuse situation. 2008 Land Cruiser brochure doesn't say "VGRS" anywhere in it but does state that it has speed sensitive power assisted rack and pinion steering. Other threads pop up in the 200 series forum for DTCs for VGRS.

edit: To be somewhat more helpful. I definitely have a 40amp fuse in the VGRS spot. Not sure what number it is, but it's in the bank of 9 square fuses.

I'm betting you don't have it based on the fact that the pin in the fuse box is not present.

I'm also betting that you need an alignment. It seems likely that your caster is a ways off causing your darty steering.

2010 LX570. In the upper left corner of the screen there is "3<>2" I have switched between 3 and 2 multiple times, nothing changes. What is this supposed to do???

Anyone have or think up a spare tire fill valve leader solution? Shouldnt be tooo complicated to make but thought id ask.

Stupid I know, but this is SQOD.

My 5th is new from a recent warranty swap and im just not going to bother rotating it in anymore at home. Its just too much work and im never keeping track over time. And i um, dont really care anymore.

Id like to fashion a lead to be able to top off the air without dropping the spare at all. Not sure how i would actuate the valve in the stem though, and it will probably leak but the way ive got mine covered with my makeshift spare protector, theres no real way to get at it.

Just a curious dumb guy here, with a dumb idea. Did I mention i was lazy? Thanks.

I have no clue but its probably distance activated auto camera sensitivity setting. Wether it auto pops up on the screen at the level 3 or 2 distance measure.

Pure guess tho. Try it out.

Thank you, I will try that. I think I read in the manual that the cam view only pops up below a certain speed though. Worth a try.

Over-inflate the spare and have it last twice as long before you have to air up again? On steel spares, I would just flip over the wheel in the spare location so you have access to the valve stem, but you might not want to do that on a nicer aluminum wheel.

I have something like this on the 80 and has worked fine for several years

I would have sworn every 200-series had VGRS. It was introduced as early as 2002 in the 100-series. Did some digging. Unfortunately wasn't conclusive.

Other than it's very possible that an LC 200 could have been equipped without VGRS. Whereas every LX570 will have VGRS. Trying to find a date for which it was introduced on the LC200.

EDIT: Can't vouch for accuracy and I get somewhat conflicting info based on references, but one parts source suggests that VGRS was introduced as standard for 2013+ LCs? VGRS equipped 200s should be able to do lock to lock in 2.7 turns at a stop.

That still doesn't answer your question. I would check LCA bushings and TREs, but also the rest of the suspension. Check alignment, especially toe. Also recalibrate zero point calibration.

Hah! That looks like exactly what im after.

So do you push in some sort of mechanism on inflation or do you remove the valve core and somehow replace it when u actually need to run the spare?

Thanks!

Confirmed VGRS introduced on LC200s in the 2013+ models.

It just extends the valve and can be positioned on the other side of the wheel. I didn’t remove the stem and can add air as needed.

Another win (or loss I’m sure depending on who you ask) for the LX faithful. 2013 was the year I was guessing as well after finding multiple pictures of LC fuse boxes with no VGRS fuse. Glad your sleuthing sorted that out… I had to do some work at some point today and gave up the search.

Thank you, @TeCKis300 and @bryson and @lx200inAR . I made it to a dead link of that press room page, but did not dig further.
  • I will go to proper alignment shop and ZPC after
  • I will count my blessings of having one less system to worry about
  • I will not lament not having super best ultra everything feature, nor sperg out on forum about secret knowledge on how to retrofit
  • (please hold me accountable if 'zomg vee gee arr ess retrofit i'm in!' posts appear)
Thanks again and happy trails/garage floors.

You know, if its any comfort, ive never liked variable steering.

From a “performance driving” point of view, i prefer everything linear.
But even on a BMW parking lot maneuvering is a design requirement these days.

Its only really nice at super high speeds to be drum tight, which I’ll never really do in the 200.
