I'm taking 10. Some of that is highway, but it'll be thin.

Hmmm. Mixed city/hwy/mountain driving this weekend, and loaded with family stuff, I made it to 275 miles, think I could have made 300, but chickened out and put my reserve in before it died in a bad curve or uphill. I only have a 20 gallon tank. 5 gallon can reserve. Pretty sure I'll be alright, but I'll see if I have room for another can. Poor cherokee is gonna be draggin' a$$ with all the gear in it!

Leon, do you remember the mileage on the Kokopelli trip? I thought it was in the thread for that trip, but I don't see it. I think when we filled up in Moab I had figured that I probably wouldn't have needed extra gas, but it would have been very tight. I'm seeing 142 miles , but I don't think that includes the bit from Fruita to the trailhead, or from the end of the trail into Moab. Maybe 200 miles?

I think it was in the 140 miles range for the trail. Not sure about the total, seems like a good guess. I know I took 5 on that trip but I don't know if I took more. I know we had more than enough?

The real wrench in things is the road closure still in effect. I will call and find out what they anticipate so our plans could change quite a bit, stay tuned.

Update

I talked to someone at the Maze Ranger District and Flint trail is still blocked and will not be open for our trip. Our first night was to be Maze Overlook, I think I may have said Doll House by mistake in the past. Anyhow, I changed our permits to camp at Doll House nights 1 and 2 as Saturday will be a very long day so I thought we could make Sunday an easier day to recharge. We are looking at maybe 10 hours from Glennwood Springs.

As for gas our situation has changed and we will now only be about 150 miles between gas fill ups. I will only bring one extra 5 gallon can.

That's to bad - Flint trail sounds interesting from what I've read. Do you have a route plan you could share? I've got some maps, but haven't been able to piece together what you're thinking from the earlier posts on overnights.

Day 1 To Doll House from Rifle via Hite. Doll House night two. Day three out Poison Spring Road heading towards Hite (different route) make dirty devil crossing then camp. Day 4 to Hite then into Beef Basin camp in there somewhere. Day 5 early into Needles district explore and camp at Split Top (out of backcountry)

Went to Urgent Care this afternoon. Sinus Infection. Just popped the first two of my Z-pack. :(

Bummer, get fixed up quick!!

Cool - packing thing up early morning, and hope to be on the road NLT 10:00. Still have to program those repeaters

I'll get in touch with you later in the day. Hope to meet up in Rifle tomorrow night. Colorado connection repeaters.

Best wishes to all the folks going to explore the maze. Have a great week of wheeling and keep the rubber side down.

The trip was an absolute BLAST, but our family had top leave a couple days early due to illness, so I'll let the others write a more complete write-up. Here are some pics from the first four days of the trip:

... and since we left a little early, we decided to stop by the Goblin Valley State Park to eat a bit of lunch (use the pit toilets ;)) and play with the Goblins a bit.

Day 1

We all rendezvoused in Rifle at about 9:30. Eric and my group unfortunately camped at different parks right outside Rifle the night before. Travis came in from Breckenridge and Luke from Eagle. Pretty uneventful drive into Utah, we stopped at the Hite overlook before filling up with gas in Hite. While airing down around 5:30 pm for the drive into the Doll House I asked a Jeep who had just come out from there and he said it took him 5 and half hours …ugh.. He said he took his time so I was sure we could do it quicker. The first couple of hours were kind of fast, more for some then others ;) After our last intersection we slowed down a bit and that really wasn’t much of a choice. We did get to a few tricky parts and luckily we got those done before dark. Then it got pitch black out and I lost the trail a couple of times when it went across some slab rock. The drive also required scouting drop offs by flashlights on several occasions and even after that it felt like a “drop of faith”. Headlight shinning into blackness as the hood drops and still nothing to see but dark, still nothing, still nothing, until finally you drop enough to see the trees or the ground. We rolled into camp about 10:30 pm with Eric and me in one spot, Luke and Travis in another. A quick look at the brilliant star light and a light bite of food and it was in bed (RTT ) by 12:05 Sunday morning. Lots of hitch dragging on this stretch.

Day 2

Camp 1 decided to do Beehive arch hike in the morning and check out Chimney rock and a hike to some canyon rims in the afternoon. Camp 2 I believe did the Surprise Valley/grainery hike in the morning and Beehive in the afternoon. It was nice to sit back a relax a bit as well after that long drive in. Stayed at the Doll House a second night.

Day 3

We headed out from Doll House to Poison Spring Canyon. Lots of great scenery down that way. We got to the Dirty Devil crossing. There was a bit of a ledge to drop into but it turned out to be not too deep. Peggy and a few kids went ahead and waded across before I drove it. We camped at the crossing that
night. Saw and Iridium flare (ask Eric) that night and a few shooting stars.
