I think your terminology is not correct. The same bearings, races, spindles, locknuts are used in all setups to mount the wheel hub/rotor to the spindle. The spindle has a brass bushing or roller bearing internally that the birfield stub axle rides on. When adding manual "locking" hubs you are replacing the standard external drive flanges with the locking hubs. With the exception of drive flanges I would not install used parts as used parts most likely are worn and you be replacing those parts with new in a short period of time.

He’s talking about a 70 series with electric hubs. The smart upgrade in the 70 series world is to get rid of the s***ty electric hub system and go manual.

The spindles and wheel hubs and the knuckle housings are different.

He’s most likely posted in the wrong section…

That is absolutely correct. I need a set of the unreliable spindles and locknut

Bringing this back from the dead. Is the consensus that the solid bushing is far more “reliable” than the new needle bearing & bushing?

In other words, would you go out of your way to replace the needle bearing with a solid bushing?

Considering it’s been a few years, any new evidence to support one or the other?

We work on lots and lots of 80-series and some 70-series cruisers.
Seeing a spindle bearing issue or failure is extremely uncommon.
We’ve upgraded tots of worn out bushings to the Terrain Tamer bearing & bushing setup without any issues.

Hope that helps.

As Georg mentioned, it is rare to see a failure with the bearing. In my experience it's been related to broken birf debris getting worked into the bearing. So if you're breaking axles regularly and doing swaps out on the trail, I suppose a bushing only may be the solution for you.

At that, we do get customer requests for bushing only so we stock a ready-to-shop spindle sans bearing. Part# FA60080ABUSH. They are ~$95/each.

I ordered a set of replacement spindles with the needle bearings in them from Kurt, at Cruiser outfitters back in March of 2020, I'm happy to report they are working fine, no problems with the needle bearings at all,

FWIW: I retrofitted the newer style short bushing-bearing combo into the original spindles on my 96 model 15 years and 100,000 miles ago. Knuckles/Birfs were packed with high Moly content grease. Front axle feels smooth/quiet no issues. Will report back on how the short bushing/bearings look when I pull it all apart for a front axle service but then it's running so well IDK when that will be.

I’m running the same needle bearing spindles from Kurt for years now with 39” tires and extremely rock crawling, no issues with them.
