Speedometer and Tachometer don't work (1 Viewer)

I've got a '91 FJ80 with about 220,000 miles on it. I bought it earlier this year and since purchasing, neither the speedometer nor tachometer have functioned at all. The odometer does work . I ordered a new speedo cable but haven't installed it yet, wanted to hop on here first. I have a couple questions:

1. Are the tachometer and speedometer connected? Does one's ability to function depend on the other?
2. Does it mean anything that my odometer works and my speedo doesn't? I'm wondering if the cable is functioning and its the actual speedometer cluster that is toast.

Other note:
When it's cold out, there is a clicking noise coming from behind the dash. Seems to be common problem on here and indicator that the cable needs to be replaced.

Speedo is mechanical.
Tach is electrical.
They really can't be related.

I believe the odo works off the cable as well as the speedometer. I would guess the speedo problem is at the dial since the odo is still working

I had the speedo go out on me. I removed the gauge cluster and found that the speedometer needle shaft had sheared. That is why the odometer worked and the cable was fine. This doesn't explain why your tach doesn't work though.
