Hi,

Can one please post pictures of the speedo assembly (the one in back of the transfer case) with little plastic gear and O-rings. I forgot the little O-rings (there are 3?) are fitted in. My truck is a '75 FJ40.

Thanks in advance.

Should just be two....one inside the speedo drive gear housing above the bushing/sleeve, and one on the outside of the drive housing....

Thanks, Steve. Ok, I figured out where the bigger O-ring goes. now I have 2 small black O-rings left in the rebuilt kit, which one should I use and where does it goes?

The smaller one on the right....

Did you get the old one out of the speedo drive housing yet?

Look inside that steel housing in the picture...there is a little bushing that will slide out...pull that out and you will see the seal inside the housing....they can be fun to get to.

Pull the seal out and match them up. :)

I got it! I missed that 0-ring in the last rebuild and that explained why gear oil got to the inside of the speedo cable housing. Getting to replace that 32-year-old little o-ring would be interesting.

Thanks very much. :bounce: :bounce2: :bounce:

Great. Yet another thing. Mine's all out. We got smart and didn't attempt to get it out without removing the floor. We'll hopefully get it back together this weekend.

This thread was a real sanity saver today after I couldn't find any of this info in my FSM. I finally managed to get that cursed bushing out, but I stretched the little spring in the process. Do I reuse the bushing, or does the thick felt o-ring take it's place? Also, there was no rubber o-ring in my housing at all, which may explain some of the oil that was leaking...

Post up some pictures of what you have. There are a couple different styles.

Also, take a look at the F A Q <---- this is a link

Hi Poser. When I dug through the FAQ I found this thread to seem the most relevant. If there's one there that spells this out I missed it. Here's what I have. This from a '78 BTW.

So where was that 2F engine valve stem seal looking thing located?

You mean the black rubber thing? That was down inside the metal housing and I thought that was the plastic bushing referred to above. I've never had one of these apart before so I don't know what I'm looking at.

That's just like the one in my BJ60. Those seals are a PAIN to remove and install. Mine was leaking so I did it. I was expecting an "O" ring as well until I saw the spring and then I began to get a little frustrated.

SOR shows a change at 11/78, which is the date of my truck. The confusing bit is that they have the newer piece listed beginning in 11/78 also. Cruiser_Guy, if my housing looks like the one in your 82 BJ60 then I must have the later piece. So apparently there's no o-ring in there. Can I get away with using the o-ring that came with my rebuild kit or do I have to use that seal?

If you have the seal then the housing will not be machined for an "O" ring. The seal is relatively cheap and it was in stock here at the dealer in Guatemala. Alternatively you could probably use an older speedo gear peice that has the "O" ring.

Have fun!! :) It was a real PAIN! You don't want to score the housing when removing the seal and you don't want to destroy the seal when pressing it in. I was able to get it out by pushing it with a screwdriver and then I found the largest deep socket that would fit in the bore of the housing and used that to gently push the seal in. You might want to find a washer or something for the end of the socket if the socket is heavily rounded at the end.

I know this is an old thread, but this is the only thread I could find discussing the later driven gear housing assembly.

Where did you put the white grommet/spacer piece? In the housing after the black seal was seated?

What extra pieces are needed for the late model driven gear housing? I've found a wealth of info on Mud about the earlier driven gear housing assembly, but I'm a bit lost as to how the late ones work.

Thanks,
Stephen
