Just a quick spark plug question:

I pulled the plugs this morning to check the gaps. The gaps were all over the place, most set much wider than they should be. I adjusted them all to .31 per the FSM and now my FJ60 is bucking quite a bit. I'm running a stock distributor.

I wasn't sure if I need to reset the timing, or if I should open the plugs back up a little.

I would appreciate a little advice from anyone more experienced than me, which is probably most people on this board.

Thanks, Pete

You sure the plug wires are plugged up correctly?

I thought .035 was the #. I run mine .050 with a aftermarket Coil. I've had them like that for two years now. But it did not make a hugh difference, like it did on some older carb type engines. So I'd say go with .035. And the distributor timing wont change. Changing the gap on the plugs will change the overall timing by ms, but not enough to worry about.

Thanks for the quick replies.

I'm 99% sure the wires are correct because I did them one at a time - I'll go back though and make sure they're all snug.

Thanks Benjamin for replying about the timing. I think I'll go back and open the gaps just a bit to .35 or a little more and see if that gets me back to the way it was running before.

Dont go more than .035, as your stock coil may not have the capacity to jump the gap under heavy loads. ;)

Thanks everybody - I'm going to buy some new Denso's and I'll report back. I'll be out of town for a few weeks starting Sunday, so probably won't reply until then.

Much appreciated. Pete

If you have the Denso distributor cap, then all of the numbers are labeled on the cap as to which wire goes to which plug. I would also check the resistance of the wires and make sure that everything has good conductivity. Sometimes if you really have to yank on the boot to pull it off the plug, it can damage the connector to the wire underneath and cause it to miss-fire.

Spark Plug Gap from the FSM is .031
