Anyone shopped prices on 4:88's lately?

Any opinions on the quality of one company over the other?

I really like Randy's Ring & Pinion. They do a lot of volume so you get great prices and also their guys are real knowledge too like a small shop and will help you out and answer questions.

We have sold quite a few of everything... the Sierra's have been a great option the last 4-5 years. I have literally sold hundereds of sets (dozens to Mudders's) without any reported failures. Everything can break, but these arn't Genuine's ;)

I've been happy with Precision and Yukon too. Oddly enough some come from the same place ;)

LOL! This like the what's your favorite beer debate... everyone has thier differences. Here is what I have gathered in my research. Interestingly enough, talking with Spicer two years ago they confirmed that Yukon and Precision actually are made differently, both in metal and finish. Maybe that's changed? anyhow, here's my .02...

There are three major gear manufacturers in the United States:
Dana/Spicer
Richmond
US Gear

There are a handful of non-US based companies in many countries, including China, India, the Philippines and Italy.

There are 2 types of Yukon Gears: Yukon (manufactured by Spicer) and Yukon Value (usually manufactured in the Philippines in a factory owned by Spicer). The regular Yukon gears are produced in the US. They are considered high-quality gears.

The trademark of the Yukon Value brand of gears is noise, meaning the tolerances are not set as well as the U.S. produced gears. While this does not translate into a necessarily weaker gear, one has to suspect there may be other quality issues.

Dana/Spicer also manufactures Precision gears in the US. They are considered high quality gears.

Superior Gear and Genuine Gears are made in China. They are well known to be of low quality. The signs are loudness, weakness, poor performance under shock load and a susceptibility to failure under prolonged high-heat conditions (i.e. towing or slow trail riding).

Just as Four Wheel Parts has a vested interest in Pro-Comp, they have a vested interest in Genuine Gears, and this is why they push them.

Humbly submitted... :)

Agreed on the beer debate... :D

I should classify my statement, I didn't mean to say that Yukon and Precision come from the same place. But I can gaurantee you that Yukon, Sierra, West Coast, Valueline and can... Different gears can come right out of the box with the same Antonia Masero (Italy, spelling?) marking on them. Funny when Yukon is out of 4.88 Reverse cuts, so is West Coast... no coincidence ;) I had actually talked to a couple of the manufactures about testing their gears in the strengths lab at school, possibly looking at the grain, etc. They wern't too receptive about testing them... :D

Everyone reboxes everyone's stuff... amazing how much it happens even by competitors.

Kurt -
So you're saying OEM is better than Yukon/Precision? I'm lucky to only need 4.11s.

I thought there are no big really diferente between OEM and high quality gears .. as Prescision ..

The pre braking proces are a part of al grears . ?

Not saying that at all... Toyota gears are very high quality. I know that some Reverse Cut gear sets come from the same manufacture that makes stuff for Toyota (not sure if they currently make R&P's). Everyone has their opinion when it comes to gears, but like I said, stick with any of them from a reputable dealer (that knows Toyotas) and you should be fine.
