Are you really wanting to keep it stock looking under the hood?
Just wondering if that is a firm goal? Or would you rather drop in a running engine and drivetrain?

Are you looking at power steering? If you go that route I think that's when you might need the later double pulley and later water pump (for the pulley to mate to) and then have to mod the rad mount holes a little to move it forward (no big deal) and/or modify the shroud or get a 2f fan shroud

Possibly might also need or want to move the alt to rh mount. But dont take all that as gospel--any experts want to chime in on minimum work to add power steering to the 1 + 2F combo?

In the beginning I didnt know a thing about FJs and I was just going to do a little spruce up and drive it. The more I learned on mud, the more I changed plans and wound up doing a frame off and a 2f and drivetrain swap so things can change depending on the level of info you are starting with. The more things change the more it costs too

Just food for thought

Yes, I'm certainly in the "don't know a thing about FJ's" category right now, but I've learned a lot over the past couple months through trial and error and of course from helpful mudders and lots of reading on here. My goal at this point is to get a good running motor in it. I've dumped a ton of $$$ into body work (which has now progressed to a complete frame off), new wiring harness, new brakes, new lift, new lights, door handles, glass, weather stripping complete, radiator, fuel tank, tires / wheels, etc. etc. I've rebuilt the 3 speed and xfer case and would like to be able to use that for now instead of having to pony up for a 4 speed or other. This rig will not see much off road initially so power steering is not super critical to me right now. I want to get it cleaned up and a reliable driver for now so me and the :princess: can cruise about. Once that's done I'm sure I'll tear it all out and put something else in cause i'll hate the 3 speed, want more power, etc :) But that's just how I roll.

I'm talking to someone about a "good" 2F coming out of their '78. My fear with that approach is that I get this baby looking cherry, drop in this "good" motor, and then i get about 1000 miles out of it before i have to pull it and rebuild. The SOR Reman will be substantially more expensive, but it does come with some peace of mind. I don't know, I'm torn, change my mind about 12 times per day. But at this point, my wallet is squealing like a stuck pig (pardon the pun), so I'm leaning heavily on rolling the dice with a good used 2F.

Don't be too quick to think that a 2F will require a rebuild. They typically can run to extremely high miles. If you get one that has decent compression and good oil pressure, it will likely need nothing other than an oil change for YEARS. Just as a reference, the 2F in my Fj60 has 220k miles and runs like new without smoke, oil burning etc.

I've seen running F motors given away free, and good running 2Fs for $200. I bought a pristine 2F for $300. They come up all the time for $500. That's lot's better than any rebuild. Just buy one that you can hear/see run before you buy, and make sure it has ALL the assessories attached to it.

If you are just dying to build a motor, than do it, but likely not needed. And if you do build a motor, I can see no reason to build an F. The 2F would be better in every respect. I do kind of like Jim's idea of a 2F dressed up to look like an F. That would be subtle and trick.

10-4.........Patience Patience....I'll keep looking for a deal like that.

I have a 60 series with 220K miles, burns and leaks oil, low compression in one cylinder, and it still runs great. These engines will run and run, as long as you keep the oil changed, and full. Feed them lots of gas and do a little tune up now and then. I would not be afraid of any good, running 2F that anybody offers you. Put new gaskets and seals on it and drive it, bet it will last you 10 years as is in most cases.

Well, I've been looking for a decent F135 for my restoration...not a rebuild, but a true restoration...so I can see why he would be looking for an older engine. Sounds like he did a lot of work to his cruiser, and the right engine would keep it all stock.

As for people dumping the old engines...I've heard of this, but found nothing close enough to home to make it work it...I did have a few guys in CA offer them up if I can pick them up...but I am just a little too far.

gb043075...sounds like you are still on the fence.

Yes, on the fence about to fall onto the side of desparation....it'll be ready for a motor very soon...

Hi
I know this is off topic, but I went to your blog and saw the rebuild recover of your seats. Which covers did you use? How difficult, the usual questions. Are you happy with the fit and finish for the price? Thanks in advance.

SOR covers and cushions for front seat, upholstery shop made rears and cushions to match. The shop also put the covers on for me, I didn't want to spend all that money and then screw them up. he charged me a couple hundred bucks to do it, but money well spent in my opinion. Very happy with the end result. I'm guessing you saw it, but had the frames blasted and and powder coated as well.
