i hope it's ok to crosspost this....i saw it on pirate and thought it might be interesting to some here.....

1 ton toy front....80/9.5 - Pirate4x4.Com Bulletin Board

this is a lot of work to get a 1.5" increase in ring gear size.....and to me the only thing 1 ton about this is the 80 series birfs...those badboys are HUGE....but it still just has 30 spline inner axles and i'm not so sure that a high pinion 8" diff wouldn't be stronger in the front than a 9.5 low pinion.....anyone know?

I dont think 80 series birfs (Longs) are any stronger than the mini truck 30 spline longs.. so i dont see the point in that other than the knuckle ball being stronger..

Pinnion strengths on both 3rds are the same. Ring will have alot more gear contact!

and the knuckle design of the 80 series stuff is crappy for hi steer.. i think id rather have a widened 60 front. with regular (easy to find, cheep) Birfs and knuckles on there

but aren't the 80 series knuckles bigger than 40/60/60 series knuckles ?

yes, almost twice as big....surely it's stronger?

I'm not refereing to the birf or the inner ... I was wondering about the complete knuckle, wheel bearings, king ping bearings and all stuff ..

I have seen plenty of each broken. If the arms are kept tight it’s a none-issue. The kingpin bearings however may be larger, but marlin has a solution for that now.

I don't own them but the pic of the truck in the air is my buddy's and he has them (obviously) No problems to date. I'm pumped that I have marlin arms so i can just upgrade to the bigger kingpin/bearing combo for half the cost :)

combined with the 5th stud mod this will be the beef......in your face trail-gear!

30 spline longs are Breaking at the Splines, and the 80 series stuff is the same 30 splines so i dont see how they could be any stronger..

Trevor

I have seen two busted 30 spline longs and neither was at the splines . The cage let go in both instances . I would think the 80 series birfs would be a lot stronger than the smaller 30 spliners . They look to be about 25% bigger so wouldn't that equate to 25% more strength in the birf itself ?

and the 30 spiline 80 series longfield birfs must be duper strong

When i was considering what it would take to run 42's on my 80 i called and spoke with longfield who told me they have never had a 30 spline 80 series birf returned for replacement.

i thought that i had read somewhere that a factory 80 series birf was roughly equivalent in strength to a mini/40/60 sized longfield?
