Not an emergency, but was going to swap my spark plugs out on ‘64. I bought Denso W14EXR-U at the recommendation on MUD.

The plug on the right is the one I took out. Obviously these are different sizes….will that matter? I don’t want the piston to smack the new plugs. If so, which spark plugs would match what I took out??

You need to get the correct plug for your unit! - long reach could very well cause issues in a short reach head.

Yeah, I thought these were based on what others said. But these are a different internal length. The lengths of the part where the plug wires go are the same length….the threaded part with the spark end is longer.

Any ideas what would fit?

Based on the pics here the threaded part is the same length.

I think the short reach is the correct plug for your unit. Did it run good with your old plugs?

In some other spark plug thread, this is the update one they used -
Yes, it runs fine with the old plugs despite the one plug I pulled out gapped at .59…lol. I haven’t pulled the rest out yet. And my idle is 1600-2500 depending on the day.

The site above says those don’t work when I plug in a 1964. Hmm. I wonder if O’Reillys, AutoZone etc will have NGK or Denso that will fit correctly.

The overall length of the plug is not as important as the "reach". The reach is the length of the threaded part.

According to Rockauto.com, the reach of the Autolite 85 plug is 3/8". The reach of the Denso is 3/4".

Denso has no listing for Land Cruiser engine spark plugs earlier than 1967.

Note that there are a number of parts not applicable to all Land Cruiser engines from 1958 to the 1980's.

Correct. The reach on the Denso I got is longer…the pics on all the major vendors show the 3/4” reach, even for 1964…I just don’t want to take a chance.

Could be really small hands (F Engine Repair Manual)

Thanks. I reviewed that before posting and not a lot of year specific relevance to mine. Later F engines apparently use the longer plugs, but no verification on the waitlist F engines.

Circling back to close this out and I’ll update my ‘build’ thread with the info. For my 1964, the Denso 3037 (W16PR-U) are the correct size spark plugs. Only two came in today…other 4 should be in soon. Two didn’t make any difference swapping them out gapped to .031. The old ones were (Autolite 85 I think) gapped to .055.
