solenoid click '86 4runner

I have what seems like the standard solenoid click when I turn the key. Keep trying and after a few tries the starter engages. For me in the past the click has always come from the starter solenoid, which is mounted on the fender (Ford) or on the starter (Chev, etc.). But the click on my 4runner is coming from under the dash.

I bypassed the clutch safety switch but that didn't help.

What's the deal? Is there another relay besides the starter solenoid? The wiring diagrams in my repair manual have been copied and shrunk to fit and I can't read the labels very well.

You need new contacts in the starter motor. Get them from Toyota and make sure you get them in straight, otherwise you'll stil have problems. You could also check the battery cable that runs to the starter.

Oh, and that click is the starter relay.

You may not be getting enough current to the starter through the little wire. Read through this:
