Closing out this thread as I decided to keep the truck and build it more! gregnash's estimate was pretty close, shop provided fair pricing for the rebuild + suspension upgrades.


Mileage: ~165k
Clean title. Zero rust.

- Timing belt/water pump - 110k
- Heater T's swapped out - 130k
- Complete tranny fluid swap - 130k
- Radiator flush (has only had Toyota Red since new)
- New serpentine and pulley - 160k
- Synthetic oil changes every 5k miles

You’re totally right and I’m still open to keeping it. To be honest if I wasn’t starting a family and if my commute didn’t just bump up it’d for sure be a no brainer for me too.

Not true cost... just a number I thought I remembered reading when I was looking up info on the dreaded 2000/2001 issues. However, from the 60 side, you can still get the OEM 5spd manual tranny and everything for less than $3500 last I looked (which was maybe a few months ago) so I would assume that a new reman'd 4spd wouldn't be overly expensive.

EDIT: Quick search and looks like $3k may be close to accurate when all said and done.

Good info. I remember in my search that one guy said he paid 10k for trans replacement. I think at a dealer though, which is nuts.

No worries! This is all helpful to the process. A lot of the threads are older so it may have been dealer pricing when the 100 series was relatively new. The shops going to take a look so I'll have actually pricing soon.

Alternatively a used tranny (not reman) can be pulled and swapped for considerably less, especially if you plan to do the work yourself.

This is very true and the obvious cheaper way out but it is also a complete crap shoot. You have little to no idea how well the tranny being pulled was maintained or anything like that. At least with a reman'd they normally come with a 90-day warranty or something to the sort.

RPM sees a lot of 100's go through there. I know it won't be "cheap" - but it will be well done.

Will do! I've gotten work done from RPM before and so have many of my friends. Steve is a stand up guy and the team does great work - if you're looking to get some stuff done Tanner I'd highly recommend them.

At 160,000 miles, the PO had a new transmission installed at the local Chevy dealer (we dont have a Toyota Dealer for 1 1/2 hour drive). Receipt was for $5,000.

Interesting to know what drove that price. The "new" part, certainly. The remoteness. They had the PO by the short-hairs because it would appear there was no other choice. Allowing for more competition would have likely driven the cost down at least a little.
