They look fancy and are very expensive($400), didn't you say your budget was limited????
Stock shackles will work just fine. If you have extra money buy a locker for the rear, if you have more money get a locker for the front. If you still have money buy an 8274.
Cutesy expensive shackles aren't going keep you from getting stuck. imho

Cruiser_King,

good on ya, mate - for having the balls to give it a go.

And for having the sense to come and ask those who know for some advice so as not to cock it up and spend a fortune or, worse still, hurt someone.

Seems to me like you've taken on board people's advice and are going for SUA with locker and power-steering, is that right?

I reckon there are a lot of us who at 30-something wish we had the opportunity that you have now at the age of 16. If you see a green glow over the horizon - it's just a heap load of jealousy! ;o)

Love your spirit - positive attitude and not afraid to put your best foot forward. That's how we make progress, learn and develop. And great that you're able to be able to come to a place like this and get some advice that will prevent injury.

I have a similar project down-under here in New Zealand. But nowhere near your fabrication skills ;o(

Good luck with your project, bro. Look forward to seeing the pics and write-up. ;o)

yea i have an aussie locker comming for the front and rear and im doing powersteering for now im not gonna bother lifting it till i have the time to do the SOA properly im just gonna make sure the trucks in tip top shape before i dont anything else to it

That sounds like a good game plan, at 16 you have plenty time left to SOA  I did the SOA myself and cost lots more than $1500 and before that I ran OME lift which is pretty sweet. Well, I would trade my SOA for being 16 again :):):)

that camaro steering box is mostlikely a 3 bolt 3 turn unit. and that makes for some scary steering. if i wer you, i'd hit the local pick-n-pull type wrecking yards and find the proper steering box. something from an old grand wagoneer or grand cherokee outta do it. you want a 4 bolt 4.25 turn box.

yea i know where one is outta a pick up i just gotta cheak it trucks in the garage right now on jackstands gettin ready for insurenece get my N on april 29 so i wanna make sure its road worthy

wrong box. maybe you did'nt read my post. you need a 4 bolt, 4.25 turn box that mounts on the inside of the frame. the truck boxes mount to the outside of the frame and will not work. you do not have enough clearance.....

you should really take some of the feedback you're getting on here into consideration. generally speaking, the guys who do reply are doing so in an effort to help you stay safe and help you from making mistake that they/we have made. we're posting these replies because we're trying to help, not because we're bored. sometimes people already know what answers they want to hear when they ask their questions and will dis-regard anything else they hear. if you're in that crowd, then why even post up?! if you're not part of that crew, then listen to what these guys are telling you. it'll save you tons of time and money in the long run.

hey man...i was all about the spring over as well...and yea it would be cool but on the island you dont really need it all that much unless your runnen trails like devils playground and other crazy stuff like that. 35's will fit on a stock cruiser, i have 36's right now that i need to take off because the rub on a TRE (they rub because the are 16" wide, but they were FREE so thats ok). the 36's will go back on when my P/S is done. you really do need the P/S for bigger tires though, i was hard pressed to turn my 28's when they were aired down (9psi) on hamburger hill. you should come out to VI cruisers meeting the guys there are all pretty cool and helpful. the meetings are at ma millers pub but if you posted on our board ahead of time we could meet somewhere else, the did when i was 17 and wanted to join. yea...all the power to ya with the cruiser build. good to see another young buck into cruisers in vic

stick with it buddy...

good to see you're not being put off by some of the cranky beligerent old bar-stewards on this site.

And before they flame me and take that as an insult: they deserve their status - they've truly been there, done it. bought the t-shirt, sang the song and learned from experience!

But they need to remember that once upon a time they were also clue-less and full of pipe-dream ideas of 'the perfect machine' and how 'I'm sure it won't really be that hard or cost me that much!'

I think though - that in all fairness - some people are not reading this thread in full: otherwise they would see that you ARE taking on board the advice given. Your questions are no more stupid than anyone else's. And sometimes we have to ask more than once before we understand or hear the answer. The important and admirable thing is that you keep asking the questions in order to understand. ;o)

But basically, they're jealous and wish they didn't have to wait until they were much older than you are now to do their build! ;o)

So stick with it bud, don't be put off and keep on asking the questions. Just bear in mind that if you make a few mistakes, it's no-one else's fault - because you've been informed.

But as is the case with so many things in life - start with small steps, my friend...

che' bro!

You remind me of myself a few years ago. At 16 a stock landcruiser will take you anywhere you need to go at your age. Trust me... You will not want a SOA fj40 as your dd. Atleast have a honda or something else besides a bike as you're backup transportation. I've been wrenching on my 64 fj40 for 4 years now and im only running 33" tires. It can wheel with the best of them. You have no idea how expensive landcruisers are, or any wheeling rig for that matter. Lets say you throw your 1500 bucks on this SOA and your first trip you blow a tranny or an axle, or even an engine. Then your screwed. But anyways good luck

Good luck on your build!

A couple items:

Currently running 35's with 6.5" lift: 3" in the body. This allowed the SBC, sm465 & toy 4 speed to suck all the way up into the frame rails. With 6.5" rear shackles and a rock catcher shackle reversal it is possible to get 25" articulation. This has allowed me to easily go everywhere I've tried (so far). Even keeping up with some of my mini-truck, flex monster friends!

flex002.jpg

A suggestion: Install a non-restrictive power steering fluid cooler from the get go. I've been experiencing fluid boiling out on the trails!

FYI a the articulation shown, the stock drive shaft spline is a little wobbly indicating that it's just ready to pop out! This is due in part tot he lift and part by the drive train mods.

Post some pics of your progress.
Aloha

Oh, the ramp is for a friend's truck to be displayed during an up & coming "Big Boys Toy Show". Built it and well ... had to perform a "quality Check"! LOL

I run 35s with a 4 inch lift and no bumpstops and barely rub. Why would you want 9 inches of lift to run 36s?

haha - like anybody on this site really needs a sensible reason to do any of the stuff they have done... ;oP

at the end of the day - all you need to do is tell an engineer that it can't be done and wait 2 weeks for them to tell you "you were wrong, look, I've just done it..."

;o)
