So. Cal
..and I've pretty much changed everything out that I can get to, easily.

The PO had smogged it before I bought it, but the dumb technician, entered the VIN incorrectly and the DMV said I have to do it again.

Anyway, so when I bought it, it seemed to be running a little rich. I was getting a strong Sulfur smell from the exhaust. Since I looked around and didn't see Lucifer, I figured it was the FJ60. ;)

I adjusted the carb(Per the FSM), but the Sulfur smell is still there.

I'm thinking it could also be the CAT and I have a new one, but don't want to throw it on there for fear that if the Carb needs rebuilding, that it might screw my brand new CAT by overheating it.

I will soon send my Carb out to get rebuilt by someone on this Forum, but for now, I need to smog it.

So in the meantime, I'm hoping it'll pass as is.

I changed out the oil, adjusted the timing to FSM specs, changed the Airfilter, PCV, spark plugs, checked all the vacuum lines and they're all there.

What else would you guys suggest?

Thanks again!

btw, it runs fine once I'm moving. It'll idle a little rough, but once I get going, it has plenty of power and runs great.

hmm... I just got done with mine a week ago. It was 160 tacos to get it passed. After it passed "wink wink" I was informed that my problem was that I was running too rich. Oh and btw, I had to get a "pre-test" to see if it had any problems. LOL! the pre-test cost me 20 additional tacos...

soooo.... anyone near the los angeles area might want to try to get it done in my neck of the woods.... LOL!

Probably talked about in another one of your threads but make sure the smog pump output is not coming back on the return line to air cleaner.

Thanks Nocal,

Is there a method for doing this in the FSM? Maybe the Emissions one?

I've never noticed(can't imagine why they wouldn't have it in there)a way of testing the smog pump or of the smog pump doing this.

Is there?

1. you should also adjust the valve lash
2. You should go through all the vacuum hoses and make sure they are not cracked and connected properly. Don't just look for open nipples, but make sure the hoses are connected to the right nipples, vsv's are installed properly, etc.
3. get the emissions manual. There are detailed procedures for testing all the smog equipment. Regarding specifically the AI system, there are tests to confirm the ABV is working properly and tests to check the air pump output capacity (however this test requires a special service tool).

do a search. There are some recent threads with 2f vacuum diagrams and someone has scanned the emissions manual and will email it to you (if you don't have the hard copy).

I don't get it. They send me to "test only" stations for both my smog eligible vehicles (1985 FJ60 and 1995 325i). I know my FJ60 failed as a gross polluter five or six years ago, but as far as I know the BMW has never failed...Test only stations don't do any adjustments and they don't offer a pre-test. You take your test and keep your fingers crossed...

It's kind of a scam (isn't everything from the Gov't in California?) Even though your registration notice says you have to go to a "Test Only" station, you don't. You can go to what the State licenses as a "Gold Shield" station which is authorized to do smog repairs, if your test fails. All this info is on the CA State website, if you're willing to dig for it.

I did, about 3 years ago, because of a 1990 Isuzu Trooper I had that failed. So how it works is, if you fail, then you have to go get it fixed and pay for another test. But if you go to a "Gold Shield" station in the first place, you only have to pay for the test once, and maybe a retest, which is usually half, and of course, any repairs.

Also, if you're labeled a Gross Polluter, you can apply for a CA State program which will give you $500 toward any smog repairs, payable directly to the repair station. I did it, and again, of course, the bill came to $ 499.99 which the station then billed to CA. Your tax dollars at work, folks

You can go to a Gold Shield station and request a smog test to verify the condition of the car. That test is done off-line.

Incidentally,

CA is now offering $1000 for anyone who will retire a Gross Polluting Vehicle... Anybody got a $200 POS that runs and spews smoke that I can make $800 from ?

Just asking. :grinpimp::cheers::lol:

The test only stations are also a part of the system instaled to prevent mechanics from cheating.
Or so they say. The franchize owners make a mint and the mechanics lose a ton of customers. And Dyno's are not cheap.
Be sure to double check that it is realy a test only. I was miss infomed by DMV and it cost me.
Not to mention test only techs don't know the first thing about our rigs.
Swing by your mechanic and they can enter your vin. If its a test only for real they wont be able to go any further with it.

I can attest to this Ca Program. I did it for my 89 Tercel and they fixed it enough to pass and billed the State.

I'm gonna take it to the one I took my Tercel and see what Happens. Who knows, it'll probably pass!

I've done this twice now. But what I was doing was going to the Test Only site, failing as a gross polluter then taking it to my mechanic who happens to be a Gold Sheild station and getting the work done for almost free. I was under the impression that if I had tested at the Gold Sheild station under Test Only rules I would then have to go to another station for the repairs.

Well, my understanding is a Gold Shield station can do it all, one stop shopping. But I may be wrong. It's been a few years now, and the rules are always changing, depending on who is the bigger contributor to the CA legislature.

The idea behind the Test Only Centers is they were trying to stream line the process and not get consumers in too much of an uproar over long wait times for the test, and in order to make that private enterprise work, they have to steer people to it. It came out of the old State-Run smog centers that were far away and a friggin' nightmare - it was a consumer revolt that killed that early program.

So I dunno. I guess I'm going to have to read the website agian when the time comes.

Oh I wasn't disagreeing with you Spike... I'm not sure how it works, just giving my experinces with the CARB reimbursement stuff. I'll ask my garage next time I get a chance about the test only stuff. I'd prefer to be able to do it all with them rather than have to fail at a test only center first :D

Okay so it FAILED

I was pretty sure it was, but the reason I took it to the Gold Shield Smog shop is because if it failed bad enough that it'd be considered a "Gross Polluter" then I could get the State of California to pony up to $500 to fix it to a point that it will pass.

Well, I took it in and it failed; Here are the numbers/section that it failed on:

CO(%) NO%(PPM)

TEST | RPM MAX AVG MEAS MAX AVG MEAS

15MPH | 1434 .79 0.14 1.14* 1062 414 1133*

25MPH | 2402 1.00 0.12 0.86 1073 372 0998

* DENOTES TOO HIGH OF A MEASUREMENT

what do you guys think? Failing EGR system? Bad Cat?

SORRY i TOOK SO LONG TO JOIN THE FUN.

Well I'm not advertising nothing... oh wait I am arn't I... Yeah thats it I'm advertising my taco feeding bussiness for smog test personel. You know ... If it where real, theoretically, while scarfin down the tacos, we could talk 60 tech and exchange tip and tricks on how to legally adjust the engine to pass smog and be a mean green clean machine....:doh:

now Danimal... about that build... You rebuilt your own engine ehh? Oem or non Oem.... not hijacking, just getting to the part bout his emissions system... you know if cruiserdan supplied the parts then... well that explains the whole passing thing. but If you used non oem... don't let cruiserdan see this for it might jinx it!!!! you know the legends about Cruiserdan and his superior oem parts from the dephts of the earth....LOL I will tell you one thing.... if it was not for his oem startrer rebuild parts.... I would have probably gone through about 3 rebuilds from prep boys by now...:lol:
