So I'm getting ready to Smog my FJ60...

I was pretty sure it was, but the reason I took it to the Gold Shield Smog shop is because if it failed bad enough that it'd be considered a "Gross Polluter" then I could get the State of California to pony up to $500 to fix it to a point that it will pass.
Well, I took it in and it failed; Here are the numbers/section that it failed on:
CO(%) NO%(PPM)
TEST | RPM MAX AVG MEAS MAX AVG MEAS
15MPH | 1434 .79 0.14 1.14* 1062 414 1133*

25MPH | 2402 1.00 0.12 0.86 1073 372 0998

* DENOTES TOO HIGH OF A MEASUREMENT
what do you guys think? Failing EGR system? Bad Cat?

So you have the original CAT on there? Those numbers are not that high. I would go ahead and stick on the new CAT for the next test. I was running with a lot higher numbers with my new CAT and it did not hurt it. Chances are if the CAT is bad you will pass after replacing it. Double check your timing.

Also things to check to lower CO:
Check and make sure choke flap is opened all the way when cable is pushed in
Got a clean paper air filter installed

Check for NO:
Pull a vacuum on EGR valve while idling and it should start running real rough. Make sure the EGR valve hold a vacuum. You can use a hand pump.

That was a good first test. You are close. :)

SORRY i TOOK SO LONG TO JOIN THE FUN.

Well I'm not advertising nothing... oh wait I am arn't I... Yeah thats it I'm advertising my taco feeding bussiness for smog test personel. You know ... If it where real, theoretically, while scarfin down the tacos, we could talk 60 tech and exchange tip and tricks on how to legally adjust the engine to pass smog and be a mean green clean machine....:doh:

now Danimal... about that build... You rebuilt your own engine ehh? Oem or non Oem.... not hijacking, just getting to the part bout his emissions system... you know if cruiserdan supplied the parts then... well that explains the whole passing thing. but If you used non oem... don't let cruiserdan see this for it might jinx it!!!! you know the legends about Cruiserdan and his superior oem parts from the dephts of the earth....LOL I will tell you one thing.... if it was not for his oem startrer rebuild parts.... I would have probably gone through about 3 rebuilds from prep boys by now...:lol:

Gas-a-lot,

Just wondering... do you take bong hits when you get up in the morning ? :D:D:D:D

And what's a prep boy?

I actually have a brand new cat from MagnaFlow...Direct Replacement with the tube for the Thermo Sensor.

Anyway, I was going to bolt it on(with new gaskets and all), but I was leery of putting it on because if the Sulfur smell emanating from the exhaust might be coming from the Carb, it might burn up my new Cat.

I also have a new air filter for it too. I will put it on.

I'm gonna check all the different emissions compnents on it this weekend including the EGR valve.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

The rich condition wont burn up the CAT that quick. Judging by the #s you gave the CAT will get you through. You can always swap it back afterwards until you get the carb done (Jim C did mine and he's great)The AI part of the emissions FSM will guide you through an easy check to see if you're in bypass mode. My sulfur smell went away after I replaced the smog pump. That is cheaper to replace than the carb, and if its orig, it may be time.

Just in case I need to get a Smog Pump...where do you guys suggest?

I'm thinking a used one could maybe put me back at square one, no?

Thanks

IMO, I say go diesel and forget about that smog headache. Just registered my 6.2 powered 60 to the DMV the other day, now my smog worries are history.

Nevermind, I just saw another thread about Smog Pumps!

Please explain how you registered it.

All I did was take the title to the DMV and tell them that I wanted to change it to diesel. They inspected my cruiser to make sure it indeed is a diesel, payed my registration fee and was on my way, stickers and all.

Thats awesome. So you never went to a referee?

Negative. I called many DMV locations in my area prior to install just to make sure its that easy. I was also supposed to get my smog check a month prior to me changing the title but they did not charge me any late fees.

spike strip! prep boys is a bad name for pep boys auto parts... you know like walls mart.

now about the rebuilt starter is a true story. And the oem parts... well just look for the tread that was made to share cruiser dan stories... LOL!!! you would get a kick out of that one.. cant search now im at work...

and no....!! I don't bong in the mornings... LOL!

oh and bout the dmv.... they don't do that. You would have to go to an inspection station... to see if you meet carb standars...

Your story is very similar to mine - numbers included. What I realized was that if everything is running right except your CAT, you most likely won't be able to pass. If your CAT is good, it can cover for other ailments in the emissions system. Everytime a fixed one part of the smog system, I got it tested. My numbers would usually be better after each test - but only slightly. Until I replaced the cat - and all my emissions dropped about 80%.

So, yes, put the new CAT on and go pass smog. Then take it off if you're worried. But if the things is running pretty good and you have adjusted it per the FSM, I think your cat will be fine. I was worried about mine because I was getting an afterfire (meaning unburned fuel). Like you, I didn't want to fry my new CAT.

With the new cat, your numbers should be a fraction of the max allowable - not just under them.

As far as the smog pump. You should be able to check by feeling the air coming out. Don't replace it if it ain't broke. Either way, I really don't think the pump will get you to pass. My emissions system was working properly (with a new pump) and I still couldn't pass until I got the cat. I just don't want you to waste your money.

Do you know if this a new attitude the dmv has adopted? Or is it a case of since the motor is in its to late to do anything about it.?

Thanks! I'll take that into consideration
