You can buy a mushroom style topper off of ebay for $25. Make sure it is a 3.5" opening, which most are.

These look to be about 5 times the cost. The engineering makes sense to me. I wonder if they are worth the extra money? I go out and watch a lot of desert racing and the dust is unbelievable. (See my post on weather stripping) the dust gets everywhere. It's my primary concern. Anybody opened one up and compared the two? Thanks, Mark.

I think the inside of the ebay precleaners has some sort of fin design, but I can't say for certain.

You realize the OEM air filter can is already a cyclone design? Run in the dust for a while and then check your tuna can. It will be loaded. Also the upgraded OEM filter is washable , so easy to get clean: like new.

I love the OEM design. I had not seen the MUDforum until after I'd already put in a KnN filter, as I've had such good luck with them on my desert racing vehicles over the years. In fact I had a partial sponsorship with them, so I'm a little biased. Anyway, a clean cool intake makes for a longer live, happier motor, so in harsh conditions, I do not feel a little redundancy in this area is a waste of money.

I would need to search but I recall there being an issue with the K&N oil and the MAFs heated wire.
Generally yes the oil in the K&N can foul up the MAF/VAF from what I read. Seems the only ones that defend the K&N are very careful with the amount of oil used on them. I wouldn't run the risk on a what a $15 part.
The new OEM filter looks so much sexier than the K&N. For what that's worth. I mean i know we were just talking about chicks and farm animals and what not.

I'm very well versed in the proper care and use of a K&N filter, and in the year or so I've been running it, I've never seen a problem, have never seen any "blow by" or other evidence of a poor seal. I use their oil filters to, for reasons I've stated elsewhere. I maybe new to the 80 world, but I'm no stranger to offroad and desert racing, and I've built a number of Toyota trucks. For certain things, like gaskets and seals, I'd never use anything but OEM, but for many other components, I think the aftermarket offers some nice benefits. It really become a Ford versus Chevy kind of argument that nobody is going to win.

I wonder if the Denso Hilux snorkels (part # Ta0142900230dd) could be modified to fit our vehicles. According to Denso R&D testing, the Denso snorkel product allegedly provides 30% more airflow over snorkel designed by TJM and Safari... I wonder if any Aussie's have tried tinkered with such an idea ?

That's not exactly an answer, now is it? I go through drive through car washes virtually every time I wash my car. If a snork could not survive this, that would be a massive inconvenience.
