Just added the Smittybilt iRack on my FJ40.
Had to modify the bolt pattern mount. Otherwise solid install.

the key word is "new" in that sentence. I'd say that 20% of my sales over the last 25 years have been
dependent on the stock FJ40 tire carrier not wanted to stay attached to the body. Rust is always a big
factor but so is metal fatigue . They last forever parked in a dry garage. I bought mine new in 78. It took
about 15 years in a dry Az climate to start showing small fractures around the mounting point.
I have friends that build accessories for Jeep. No, they don't hold up well to the bolt on carriers if they are
used hard but I'd bet 90% of new Jeeps ever see a road rougher than a dirt driveway. Most Columbian 40s
saw moisture

It should already have a a steel plate reinforcement but I'm assuming you have a Columbian FJ40, at least the top, so
I can't say for sure. The factory installed a plate that is formed to the body curve, behind the upper hinge. It helped
reinforce the body but also trapped water which caused the body to rust out there.
Here's an example of the plate . Notice the rust.

So add a steel plate on inside of mount? Is it accessible.
How has this system worked for you so far? I was thinking of the same for my 43.
