Hope someone can help me out here, i just bought a 94 LC and i just charged the a/c and when i started using it my wife wanted out of the vehicle PRONTO' and so did i but i played it cool like "what smell?"
Some where i read about a evaporator or something like that, i looked under the glove compartment and theres a black box looking thing with silver metal tape, i removed it and there were leaves and possible mold in there.

Can i remove it and clean it or do i have to buy another one since it has a whole two fingers width? Thanks hope to get some good news, since california is heating up right i might have to turn the a/c on with a car airfreshners around my neck when i drive.

Way to play it cool bro. "What smell?" That's great.

When you deal with the wife, the rule is " Deny, Deny, Deny ! "

I thought I was the only one who could smell rotting bodies through my AC....

My evaporator had a slow leak..........
it looks as bad as it smelled.

What part exactly has a "hole" that's 2 finger's width? Can you explain, or post pictures?

Yikes. I plan on taking apart my evaporator compartment tomorrow to see if I can rid my baby of that vomit-inducing smell. I hope to document it for the FAQ and maybe I'll finally get around to doing the window lift motor rebuild writeup that I've been planning.

Here's a shot of what i am talking about.

Holy freaking crap!!!! Ok, Here is the deal. There are some strains of mold out there that love freon. They smell like dog crap, cat crap, and rotting bodies, and you cannot get rid of them with the evaporator disinfectants if you have a leak. I think you have a leak in your evaporator, so first off, have an AC shop verify this, and iether have them replace it, clean out the stinky crap, and recharge the system; or order the stuff and do all that yourself.

I had this problem with our '93 Cruiser and it WELL worth $800. to get it fixed. Plus, you will need to get new housing for that evaporator, and while your in there clean the fan. There was a thread recently about cleaning the fan and I amazed at what people were finding in there.

Well i will try to do all posts that i got after i added the picture, i opened that puppy up and sure enough, theres a thick dark film on one side of the evaporator, i cleaned it and put some cleaners to the test, lets see where should i start, i tried bathroom cleaner, febreeze both the indoor and the one for cars, soap and water, and just said F*** it, i bought air freshners and through them in the housing closed it up and sealed it all back up again and i am happy with the pine smell of a/c for right now. Since i just got it i am now debating, should i rid the tape player with the one good 4 inch speaker and get a touch screen dvd/land navigation system or fix my a/c correctly. You guys help me out, put up with a/c for a few more weeks with a dead dog/cat but never get lost (land nav) and watch dvd's and listen to clear sound, or sick with a lowsy stereo while staying cool and enjoy the smell or no dead animals.

On newer Yukons and Denalis we crank the heat to full and crack the windows and they empty a can of lysol in the intake vents on the cowl and this kill most of the smell...

I think I mis-spoke earlier. My wife says the A/C guy told us the stinky mold lives on the oil that escapes from leaks in the evap. Whatever it is, I would bet that you have a leak in your evaporator and the smell will keep coming back until that is fixed.

Here's a shot of what i am talking about.

I just saw this thread. I have the same problem. Obviously, that tape covering a huge hole is not factory. Warm air blows out of that hole if it is not taped up. I know because I taped mine up as well.

Anybody know if I have to depressurize the system to replace that plastic box?

Edit: I think the box houses the evaporator.

Thanks CJF, who knew this product even existed.... My AC has had kind of a funk to it since a trip to Baja over a year ago. Some days worse than others and the Summer is here so the funk will be daily.

Times two!!! Just ordered the kit...can't wait to get the crap smell out of my hundy...

Thanks!!!

On Maui, during a certain time of year there is a major bug problem, they are called midges. After mating they loved landing on my green cruiser covering the entire hood about 1/8 of an inch thick and die there in the hot sun. I turned on the car and the AC was on full blast and sucked a few handfulls of those dead fish animal piss smelling things into the system. I had to take the entire thing apart and pull the bugs out one by one from the evap but I could never get the entire smell out, even with chemicals.

Not adding to information, but the SAME thing happened to me. I just picked up an LX450 (and he really had a dog). Got the WHOLE THING shampoo'd to rid the dog smell. Worked great x one day.

Today the dead dog is back and the :princess: noticed.

Gonna try the Lysol and check the evaporator.
