I generally remove these because they hold mud and prevent cleaning. Also make inspection and maintenance a hassle. If you are hitting rocks high enough to require a skid plate you probably need a lift or a serious skidder and set of sliders.

What do most people do? That's the question.
 
I agree with @Trunk Monkey they are cheap insurance.

if you are lookingto replace the OEM units, there are some good aftermarket alternatives. Look at ASFIR 4X4.

I took both mine off and never looked back.
 
Mine are gone, they trap heat and mask fluid leaks. I hate fluid leaks and I want to know about them right away. By the way I think they are appropriate for new cars, but inappropriate for old ones, unless you're rock crawling of course.
