I was crawling under the beast today after a long run in the hills checking things and noticed that the (non stock) muffler is starting to show signs of age. The seams are rusted and I would give it a year until they give out in areas. So For a FJ45 with the long run from the front to the rear, no CAT, and stock engine, anyone have a brand name or info for a close to stock replacement. Want to keep the back pressure within the engineered base line.
Thanks

No were in Idaho. Went to a few places today Discount muffler, and Midas, and it seems as no one really does the matching of the muffler to engine size and RPM to get a match flow any more, just "this will might work" kind of replies.
With the pipe length/size from the exhaust manifold to the rear tip outlet, that's a bit over eight/nine and a half feet and two small of a muffler will create trouble for the engine in time, and to big or free flow can do the same. I got this info from a guy that use to race cars for years and he tells me it is a bit of math play when it comes to the correct muffler for an engine regardless type. High altitude to sea level to 100 degrees to below zero the engine needs to breath right, that's his words. He say that the manufacturing companies put lots of work an money in the old days into getting the correct muffler for a car / truck.
There are a few customs shops I will check out, one is a racing car type shop, they may be the one's as I was told due to they use a computer for most of there math work. Will post out come.
Thanks much.

I just took my old muffler (don't know if it was stock or not) to a parts place and got a similar one. Same size in and outlet, same(ish) diameter and length.

I beat them up wheeling so I don't want to spend big bucks on a shiny new system.

Hi Kevin, unfortunately the one installed now is not stock it pretty small and flat.
Yeah I too don't need anything pretty just matched and functional.

1977 Stock Muffler

I replaced my stock muffler recently.

Not sure if this helps, but the [STRIKE]circumference[/STRIKE] diameter is 8 3/4" and the length is 19 1/2".

I kept the muffler for reference if there is any other info you can gather from it.

Looks as if the muffler that I am looking for was right under my eyes. I went to the pro shop today and was talking to the muffler man while looking at the FJ45. He said the best muffler for the 45 is the Walker muffler made in Australia. You oz folk probably know that name. He said that OZ has a pretty strict compliance on after market products for production cars so the muffler should be right to specs. Walker mufflers have been around for while and I do remember the name from some other time, but I will order muffler and they will install for $40 along with a picture of the FJ45 and their staff for the shop wall, can't beat that. Oh he said it is okay to use w/o cat.

Walker Mufflers

Shouldn't have any problems with the walker muffler. Good brand here. been around forever. Have had them on a few of my vehicles

X2! Walker have a very good reputation. I believe they also manufacture the shocks for Old Man Emu here in Adelaide (If the OME stuff's anything to go by, the muffler should be A+)

Worrying about flow seems kinda pointless if you still have the standard exhaust manifold. Seen how small and restrictive the passages are inside of them?
