Can anyone tell me the reason why some models of the 40 (Mainly SWB) came out with so many variants of the side vents. I have seen them with side vents on both sides, some with them on one side and some with none at all. Was it just something that Toyota did or was it specific to a region that they were exported too.

Hi Ken
I was only thinking the other day on the history of the side vents.
The crazy thoughts I was having that they were put there as an access hole to get to the top door hinge.
I know it would be bloody hard to get a spanner on those bolts if you did not have that hole there.
What ever the reason the side vents are one of the coolest part of the forty series.
Cheers

Nat I'm talking about the slotted vents not the kick vents.

O them!
Well my comment on them is they are S...s of things to sand for painting preparation.
Good luck

The lack of a passenger side vent is simply an indicator that the vehicle left the factory as a non-heater model. There were a lot of those that went to Costa Rica in the early days.

When you open the hood you will also note that the non-heater models also put the vacuum shift control box where the heater fan would have been, requiring a longer actuator cable to the dash.

Best

Never even noticed that until now. Of course it's for the heater intake. But I guess there would have been areas of the world where a heater would be laughable.
