Hello guys! Been here for a while but first time posting, because I’m finally (hopefully) gonna be an owner!

I need some opinions on whether this 2006 LX470 is too rusty. It’s a 2 owner car without any accidents on CarFax, but spent all its life in NJ. Is this structural rust or just surface rust? I’m currently in GA so I also have other options (not 2006 / 2007 tho) that are rust free.

Doesn't really look like a NJ car.

I’d pass- too much rust for me, but that seems to be decent by a lot of guy’s standards

Is it in NJ now, I can take a look if you want.

It doesn't look bad for that area. If you're planning to drive this during winter, with more exposure to salty roads, then I'd consider it providing price was right. It should hold up for many years there, possibly beyond your interest in owning a 100 series.

It looks like it has been painted underneath at some point so it's hard to tell. Gas skid is scaling off. Too rusty for me but I'd recommend checking the usual spots that go first (passenger side front sway bar mount, rear crossmember driver side by rear axle, etc).

Ask them to throw in a couple cans of pb blaster and a torch for when you wrench on it.

gas tank skid is half gone
very odd that the gas tank skid is half gone but the crossmember bolts look just fine
almost like the pics came from 2 different vehicles

If you regularly go through car washes with underbody washes in the rustbelt, this is what you get. A "decent" looking frame and floor pan,, but anywhere where salt sits on top of something, IE the tank skidplate, it rots from the top down. Usually it's heat shields, ect...

While it's not awful, there's half a country of legitimate rust free 100's out there. I'd hard pass.

That's what I get for breezing through the pics...had to go back and look again. Yeesh... it's half gone is right, got a good laugh, thanks!

I would be more concerned with the crossmembers, which are not shown in any of these images. Particular concern is the area on the driver side, rear upper spring perch, that crossmember runs from driver side to passenger side, above the spare tire crossmember. Additionally, there is no clear image of the frame rails, radiator support and rear crossmember (behind rear bumper cover). I have done extensive corrosion repair in these specific areas on our Northeast rust magnets! Oxidation on the suspension and exhaust components is easily remedied by replacing the parts.

If you, or someone cannot put your eyes and hands on this truck... I would pass.

First of all, thank you everyone for pitching in! I wasn’t sure what pictures to take so just took a few from all angles I can get to. Maybe they are not the best pictures. Thank you for your patience.

I passed on this 2006 one because I couldn’t get a peace of mind from the rust (and the AHC wasn’t working neither). Since I’m in GA, I’m aware I can get rust-free ones. Later today I checked out a few other options and finally settled with a 1999 one - rust free, working AHC, new tiers and good maintenance records for the past 4 years - for $13500. We will transfer the title tomorrow. The only issue is that the steering wheel doesn’t move front-back, only up-down.

Initially, I really liked this 2006 one because of the added horse power. However, after driving a 2006, 2003 and 1999 one, I didn’t notice too much difference. All 3 has enough power for me.

Finally, I’m really surprised how nice people are on this forum. Hoping to get to know everyone after I start working on my 1999 LX470 soon!

Welcome to the club!!! And don't forget the pictures!

How many miles on the 99 you’re about to buy? That is a lot of coin to spend . I just bought my 2007 rust free from georgia and brought it back to VA.

The power difference is noticeable on the highway , around town you won’t feel it. I’d opt for at least a 2003+ for that 5spd trans

In an era where forums are dying and absolutely awful FB groups are breading, mud is a fantastic site to be on. Not only is it very active, the knowledge on here is second to none.

Personally that is more than I'd spend on a pre 03, but if he found a clean hundy and is happy with it, more power to him. Not everything is always a screaming deal.

It has 215K miles. There was another 2003 rust free fully working one asking for $10K. I chose this 1999 one because the previous owner had an engine overhaul in the past 4 years (costed him $8K) and I like the interior better.

I did the best I can do. I’m only staying in GA for a few days before going back to NJ, and the plan to buy a car here in GA was very last minute. I browsed through all LX470 listing online, ran all over places and checked out a few of them in a day, which was EXHAUSTING. I am 90% happy with my decision here and 10% sad that I didn’t have more time to wait for better ones.

I live in metro Atlanta. There are a large number of rust-free, 100 series LX and LC grocery getters around here, many with only one or two owners. But for the most part, people know what they are worth, so there aren't many deals. Glad you found one you liked, and glad you chose one that is rust free - best of luck.

That would be too much for me. Maybe make a drive down to Florida and pick up a rust free one? I have a 2000 LX40 w/ 300k miles, no rust. Stock, just did AHC globes. Gold exterior. Hit me up if interested
