I'm going to look at a 05 LX470 on Saturday for $8900. I'm going to follow the OTRAMM pre-purchase inspection when I go to look at it. I'm taking a buddy of mine who is a mechanic as well. Is there anything else specific that I should be looking out for that isn't mentioned in the OTRAMM video? It's 276K miles but the owner says they are majority highway miles. 1 owner as well and meticulously taken care of. Southern vehicle so no rust according to owner, but I will still be checking. This vehicle is for my wife (for now) so I want to make sure I get it right. I appreciate the help!

Lucky wife and to be honest I bought my wife one with KM 75,000 on the clock and then I bought an accident-damaged one for myself and chopped it

Did I miss it or did you not list the price your thinking of buying it for?

Got it.

I'd be curious what "meticulously taken care of " translates to. Interior and exterior cleaning, nice paint, and all that is a plus, but unless it's been regularly services and kept up with the costs will add up. Just something to think about. The lack of rust so far is a huge plus. Ignore all the interior crap just go right under the truck and start looking around. Then get under the hood and do the same .

No timing belt sticker seen in the picture. How are the brakes, tires. What about the AHC suspension, is it functioning normally. Is the fluid clean? How about brake fluid? Heater tees? The list goes on and on and on and some with higher costs to fix / maintain then others.

There are great vehicles but when the yare going on 300k + 20 years of age you need to know what your getting in to.

I appreciate the advice. Owners just told me they took to dealer for regular scheduled maintenance. I asked if they had records of it and they’re looking for them currently. I’ll definitely check on everything you mentioned above. Thanks!

Sounds like a joker, or just an old man with bad organization lol. If you have the VIN ( at least with Toyota ) you can put it into Lexus Owners (?) website and get service history.

Stuff to think about, sort of in order
  • Rust. Check all over underneath. Look near spare tire and up near cross member / gas tank area
  • Leaks. Look from above and down below. The skid plate would catch most leaks so flashlight around and look for signs of anything . Look closely all over the engine
  • Timing belt / water pump / fan bracket / idlers and all those goodies hiding within
  • Brakes and rotors are sort of expensive
  • AHC . I'm no expert, seems like it's great when it's working but sucks when it's not. When it fails, people remove the system and install normal suspension. Make sure you ask about it, ask if they use it often or something like that. Some light reading
    >>The ABCs of AHC - How to Measure, Flush, and Adjust all in one place - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/the-abcs-of-ahc-how-to-measure-flush-and-adjust-all-in-one-place.1211999/
  • Does it "clunk" Shifting out of park into drive should be smooth as butter. How about when coasting and then you left off the gas, and get back on, does it "clunk"
  • Shift into 4Low and back out a few times. Remember you need to be in neutral, on flat ground, with foot on brake. Without any pressure on drivetrain it should be smooth
  • While your at it , lock the center diff up. This might clunk a little bit, meh that's probably fine but it should engage and disengage fairly quickly. You can be rolling slowly or stopped for this, rolling probably would help .
  • General condition under the hood. Looks clean in your picture. Radiator may be original, sort of fading color a bit on the tank but not too bad
  • Tires, interior, paint, all the easy stuff to look at but really doesn't affect the longevity of the vehicle

I'll update if I think of anything else.

You could see how it could all add up pretty fast. I'd push to see some service history or at least try to make sense of what needs to be done before considering price / purchasing. If there is a good amount of maintenance that's been done then I'd that's a solid price for a clean looking rig that should last a while.

Thank you for all the advice! Been a fan of 470’s/100 series for a while now but this would be the first one I’ve owned. The guy is pretty old so he said he had all of his documents in a bin in his house lol. They just moved from California to Alabama so they’re still unpacking. But I’ll definitely do a thorough check of everything you mentioned and send that list to my mechanic friend who is going with me.

You may have found a hidden gem. Fingers crossed for old man maintenance logs and a rust free truck. It does look really nice so far.

I don't like buying rigs with trailer hitches but hopefully it wasn't worked too hard. Does the LX470 have a dipstick? I don't know, but if it does add that to the list : Pull transmission fluid dipstick and wipe with clean rag. See if it's burnt.

Yeah I’ll ask him about how often they used that hitch. And based off the pictures, it doesn’t seem to have one but I can confirm on Saturday

Go there, create an account. Put the VIN in and you should be able to access all service history. As others here have mentioned, aside from regular oil changes, look for fluid changes, ahc service, timing belt, etc and when it was done to help you understand if there has been any deferred maintenance.

As long as you understand what you are in for wrt to a 275k mile vehicle, looks like you may have found a good example of one.

Bah s***, seems like these go quick when under $10k. Some people don't care about all the stuff we're discussing and just buy .

Go buy a cheep jeep and beat this piss out of it, you'll have more fun

Yeah it is what is. Might be for the best to keep the wife not mad at me for stealing her car every morning😂
