...that doesn't cost as much as I originally paid for my FJ40?!

Just got a quote from a popular local Cruiser shop of $950, the quote was 5 hrs per diff @ $96/hr (+$100 ea install kit) to swap my 4.11 gears for 4.56! And that is with pulling the 3rds myself and dropping them off.

When I had my ARB's installed, it was around $200 per diff. I find it hard to believe prices have gone up that much.

I am seriously considering doing it myself if it is really going to cost almost a grand.

I'd bet I could almost 1/2 that time including learning time on the 1st one. Sheesh.

Looking for what you paid and was it worth it and who did it.

Hey Stump,
Installing ARBs in a stock diff usually doesn’t require messing the pinion depth. This can take awhile pending on how many times you have to assemble/dissemble to get it right. The new gearsets w/ crush sleeves tends to be a bit easier.

As you probably already know, you will also have to grind the teeth for the ARB cross pin.

5 hours seems reasonable to me.

I have no doubt that you can do it but you will need to collect and fab up some special tools. I would plan to spend plenty of time on the 1st one.

Here’s a good thread that has nice pictures of pinion depth pattern.

For some reason, I was thinking you had the H55f. I’m surprised you are not going to 4.88s

Yeah, I hadn't thought of that, i guess, but I didn't think it would amount to twice the time.

I was under the impression that only 4.88's required grinding teeth.

Thanks for the link!

I thought about it, but I got a free set of 4.56's and I will be converting the 2F to a 2FE and figured the 4.56's would get me back to a little under stock gearing which would be good for on road and that would be made up by the increased HP from the 2FE.

Sounds like a great setup:p

I hope it will be... whenever I get around to actually DOING IT! I have an FJ62 sitting in front of my shop taunting me every morning.

It doesnt look that hard if you have a press or access to one, needle type torque wrench, calipers, and a depth dial indicator.
Does the garage on base/post have all that stuff?

I'm cheap though. The hardest part looks like properly crushing the crush sleeve. I've heard disaster stories w/ that part.

I'm gonna go with Ryan. We've PM'd back and forth and he is definitely the right man for the job, regardless of price.
Sam, I'm gonna go with a solid pinion spacer... it's a better long term solution. I plan on leaving those SOB's in for a long time.

While you are at it, you might want to order fresh o-rings for your arb seal housing.

He suggested the same thing. I will be doing that as well. Cheap insurance.

I ordered my install kits and solid pinion spacers and will be pulling my turds this week to drop off at OTRAMM for my long awaited regear.
Hello 90:1 crawl ratio and near stock rpm with 35's!

Whenever I can get to thet 2FE swap and 60 steering swap this thing will be SWEET!

Thought you had a Saginaw?

Nope,

Running OEM PS right now, but I think it is pushing it's limit w/ 35's as it is, so 60 series PS is in the build plan.

I'll have a 60 box tapped for hydro up for sale soon. Goin sag on mine. It's only got about 200-300 miles on it.

Damn! Had I known, I would have traded my Saginaw setup for your ported 60 box. How much are you asking for it?

I have no idea. I'm gonna go with the AGR sag setup. I'm sure we can work something out.

Got the diff out this weekend and will be dropping them off at OTRAMM Thursday! I also pulled the trigger on Longfields and chromo hubs in anticipation of 37's somtime later in the year. figured I might as well get 'em in there while I got the axle apart. Hopefully I won't have to digg in to the front axle for a long time after this job is done.

Gears and Longs installed. Quick road test confirmed perfect gearing setup... Figure 8's in the back yard and torn up grass confirmed locker operation. I am ready for GSMTR. Thanks Ryan!
