so I paid extra to get valve stems delivered today.... so I took the tires and raced down to the tire shop to get them dismounted....


but of course they don't get delivered today.... now sometime before the 7th. So let's recap (yeah, a pun). No stems, no tires. I'll go buy some replacements tomorrow and unload on some poor call center chick... fortunately I've been saving my angst so it should be good... except that I go buy more parts. I could have even gotten them from the tire shop - but no, ugh. Still beats the local shops.
 
I used to get enough mud and crud in my tire beads to bleed all the air out within a day. I finally bought a manual tire changer. Even works on my 36's with a lot of effort. Might be worth building your own. Not worth buying from Harbor Freight since it will need lots of reinforcing.
 
not having to deal with Kirkland Les Schwab would make it worth it all... occasionally they do something that is really good - other times...
- lowering tire pressure to 'recommended' despite having larger-then-stock-tires
- replacing metal valve stems with rubber
- numerous times of changing metal caps for plastic
- using their flat lift to lift a truck by its transfer case.

balanced by
- occasional, free work (balance, flat repair, etc)
- I can take them the most convoluted build and they understand the basics of alignment so they get it right (they don't follow 'specs' - which is a real paradox give the air pressure deal)
- they're nice guys
- they're pretty quick at work
- they keep good notes so the air pressure and metal cap issue has only happened a half dozen times before they got it.

what doesn't help them
- they're 1/3rd more expensive then Discount tire.

The Les Schwab in Milwaukie Oregon was where I went when I lived in Oregon; there was no detriment to them. If someone needed an example to write a book about amazing customer service, it would be them.... unfortunately, so I wonder at times if I am just holding them to too high of expectations. This one has never made a dumb mistake (like not tightening lug nuts) which is far more then I can say about their competition up here...

I need to get my own tire shop, machine shop, laser cutter, and win a lottery.
 
I am already booked up next weekend (birthdays) and I think I am working the following weekend. I spent today replacing my heater fan with an Escort one. I don't think the airflow is much improved, but I need to get out driving to be sure. I reinstalled the rear heater too. Should be an improvement.

So, presuming I can get the tires mounted... what do you think about wheeling next weekend? I should have gone today, but it's too late to plan/execute.
 
I've not been cold yet in mine. I keep thinking I'll put the rear one back in, but at this point it seems pointless. Now granted, last time we were out after lots of miles at highway speeds the heat output was marginal - but that's a block the radiator issue if it gets too bad. I still need to build some liners for the fender wells.

Next weekend is my only available one until March. March I have a couple, but the 4x4 swap is in March, and a Corvette meet as well, then April comes and snow starts to go... and I have 2 weekends taken in April too.
 
I think I am not working the next two weekends. We added one more to our rotation so it confuses me until I get used to the new schedule. I am tied up on the 11th. 12th might be free.

so after a bit of trial and error - I figured putting taps in roughly quadrants would help... it did. A lot

a bit wider track, which is a bit unfortunate because I think I'm on the wrong side of the line to do the narrower trails... ah well, it does look good and gives me a better turning circle.
Spare removal because I can take the tires off on a trail more easily and fix it.... I also need the spare for my suburban...
 
I ran 25 gram airsoft BB's in my 38" Creepy Crawlers on beadlocks. I thought they worked great so I ran them in a set of 35" Creepy crawlers on steel wheels when I downsized. Turns out I couldn't go fast enough on the 38's to find out if they were out of balance.
I vacuumed them out of the 35's because one moment the tires would be balanced and the next they would be so far out of round they would leave the pavement.
 
I'm surprised at that - 25 grams is less then 1 ounce. I put 12 ounces in mine and I used this chart

as the baseline. I don't know, but I'll find out. My surprise is I wouldn't think that (28 grams in an ounce) that one ounce would make much difference on a 60 lb tire/wheel package. (16 ounces is a pound). If anything, I think I didn't put enough in. Only one tire had been balanced, and it had quite a bit more weight on it then 12 ounces.... as I said, I'll see and report back. I like the vacuum idea too.
 
Sorry about that. 25 gram was the density of the bb's. I ran 12 ounces in the 38's and 8 ounces in the 35's
